Journal Entry 1 by raeliz64 from Leicester, Leicestershire United Kingdom on Wednesday, March 05, 2008
From Amazon - "When the hero, Walter Hartright, on a moonlit night in North London, encounters a solitary, terrified and beautiful woman dressed in white, he feels impelled to solve the mystery of her distress. The intricate plot is peopled with a finely characterised cast, from the peevish invalid Mr Fairlie to the corpulent villain Count Fosco and the enigmatic woman herself." Good mystery story. This book has a different cover to the one shown.

Journal Entry 7 by Tubereader from Bruxelles / Brussel, Bruxelles / Brussel Belgium on Wednesday, May 07, 2008
The book arrived yesterday. My mum was visiting, saw it and told me it is a great book so I am looking forward to reading it. I have a couple of rings ahead but hope I will not be too long to read it. Thanks to raeliz64 for sharing! MAY 26 UPDATE: Just a quick update to say that I will start reading this book today. I have a big exam coming up on the 7th of June, would love to finish the book before that, but might not be possible as I have just realised that it is 503 pages long and very small print. But I will definitely try my best! JUNE 3 UPDATE: I have managed to read half of the book so far. I am really enjoying it! I hope I will finish it by the end of this week (fingers crossed!) so I have just PMed molekilby for their address so that I can post the book as soon as I am done with it.

Journal Entry 8 by Tubereader from Bruxelles / Brussel, Bruxelles / Brussel Belgium on Friday, June 06, 2008
I have finished the book today, just within the one month timeframe! I really liked it. The story is really catching and, should I have not been busy with exams, I would probably have taken much less to read it as it is difficult to put down. The descriptions are really good and the story unveils itself little by little, leaving you wanting for more. I have molekilby's address so I will post the book today. Thanks so much raeliz64 for sharing this book, I have really enjoyed it!

I can't deny I found this a little heavy going. I think the small print didn't help! However, it was all worth it for the final 100 pages and the tying of loose ends. It did generate a conversation about mystery novels (I was under the impression this was one of the first), and the other person said so was Moonstone but couldn't give the author. Blow me if with a little research it's Wilkie Collins, obviously their style of books. Will pass on once I have an address.

Journal Entry 13 by KaKo27 from Sarisbury Green, Hampshire United Kingdom on Tuesday, August 19, 2008
I was drawn into the narration right from the start. It is a really twisting mystery. All characters and places are finely described, you almost think, you live with them. My favourite characters were Marian Halcombe, because she is strong minded and strong willed and for her time quite resolute and Count Fosco, because he is an intelligent person, tender in his affections, but life made him a villain. In a different setting both characters would have made a formidable couple. Laura Fairlie on the contrary appeared flimsy, but it was probably the taste of the time. I liked guessing the outcome, but the last narration by Walter Hartright was a bit to obvious for my liking. All in all a really enjoyable classic, and I am glad that I came across it.

This wasn't a fast read due to the small print, but thoroughly enjoyable anyway. I loved the language and Collins' way with words. Heading to lauraloo29's way next.

I'm struggling with the small print of this book. If it wasn't a ring, I would likely press on, but I don't want to hold it up and I have 5 others calling my name. Thank you for the opportunity to read it. I have the next address and it will be on its way to Australia this weekend. :)

A great story, but golly gee, the 1800s were incredibly slow, weren't they? I'm in Sydney for the weekend visiting my son and his - and he's kindly offered to deliver this to tqd - just down the road.

Journal Entry 25 by tqd from Sydney, New South Wales Australia on Friday, February 27, 2009
Thanks cat207! Sorry I wasn't here when the books were dropped off, but they were picked up fine. This one will go onto a scarily large Mt TBR (I'm very relieved to be last on the list, because it will take me a while to get a chance to start this!). I'm actually impressed your son found our place, the pizza delivery guys get lost all the time. :) UPDATE 11 June 2009: And this will be going to crimson-tide once I'm finished with it. Should be starting it tomorrow.
