Thought this book was an quick and interesting read that kept you interest throughout the book, but I did not find anything redeeming about the main character. I kept wanting to like him but his prejudices and fears kept rearing their ugly head. His choices did not make him a better man.

Found this book in my bank in the community newspapers stand.
I found it to be fascinating . . . learned a lot about Afghan culture and society and history. The protagonist was interesting to me because, although he did things not easy to forgive, in thinking himself to be a coward and unredeemable he redeemed himself.
Other books I've read have had characters that could not retain my interest because they were unlikeable and not sorry for it. In being part of their character, their evil was repellent. I was never able to complete a book with such a character. But this one made me wish and hope for the character's redemption.
