I just sent this off to Perryfran. Enjnoy!
Received in the mail today. Thanks Jen! I have 2 bookrings in front of this, one of which is almost 900 pages and what with the holidays, I haven't been able to read much the past week or so. Anyway, I'm looking forward to reading this and I hope to get to it by the end of January.
Edit 1/25/09: Started reading today.
Strange but intriguing trilogy containing 3 novellas: "The City of Glass," "Ghosts" and "The Locked Room." From an
Amazon.com review:
"The City of Glass" features Quinn, a solitary man, living quietly after the death of his wife and son, and writing detective stories under a pseudonym. One night, Quinn receives a mysterious phone call from a man demanding the services of a private detective, Paul Auster... Although it is clearly a wrong number, Quinn decides to pretend to be Auster and take the challenge, changing his life forever.
A complete change of life circumstances is also a fate of the protagonist of a second (and the shortest) novella "Ghosts". Blue, who is a professional private detective, receives a task from the disguised client, White, to watch Black. The trouble is, Black never does anything interesting except reading or writing, and bored Blue tries to find out, where the real secret of this investigation lies.
In the last novella "The Locked Room", the main character is involved in the publication of the works of his missing childhood friend, Fanshawe. The books are a great success, he marries Fanshawe's wife and he assumes Fanshawe's identity, happily at the beginning... These stories are definitely NOT your typical
noir mystery stories although they read as such. Each story is filled with not only the main story but with references to many literary characters and events such as Don Quixote, The Tower of Babel, Walt Whitman, Thoreau's Walden, etc. This Penguin edition calls these stories "existential" mysteries meaning that the story is concerned with the shaping of a person's self-chosen mode of existence. I would agree that these stories definitely relate to human existence and how people may choose to live. As the stories progress, you definitely don't know what to expect with each turn of the page. Overall, I thought the novellas were very engrossing and enjoyable even though they were outside of the usual. I read
Timbuktu by Auster a few months ago and also enjoyed that one. I will probably read more of him in the future.
I have judygreeneyes' address and will get this in the mail soon. Thanks again JenKazoo for sharing this one!

I read the first story of three in this book. Interesting story and style, not so much my cup of tea, but I'm glad I gave it a try. It's on to secretariat next!
Arrived safe and sound. I have 4 in front of it, so it will be awhile before I get to it, but I promise to start it as soon as I can.
This was my first exposure to Auster, so it took me awhile to get into the rythm and wit of his writing, though I loved it from the beginning. I liked the second story more than the first, and the third more than the second. I can add nothing to Perryfan's excellent review above, except that each felt as if I was discovering it layer by layer.
I've received lauraloo29's address and will get this off to her next week.

On its way to the next in line. Enjoy.
Arrived safely today. I have a few rings, but I am keeping them moving. :)
I can't get into this book. I don't want to hold onto it too long, as I have other rings. I already have the next address, so it should be in the mail this weekend. Thank you for sharing!
just recieved in the mail today. looks very interesting. thanks lauraloo and jenkazoo
I really liked this one. In fact, I read most of it in one sitting. First part was good. 2nd part was a bit unneccessary. 3rd book was a delightful read. Paul Austers books combined pulp-style detective novels with discussions of modern literature and modern themes. One of the most justified placings in the 1001 books you must read before you die. Posting book to mrbaggins1 as soon as i get near a post office.

sent to mrbaggins1 in the post by airmail this morning. think about it - 3 continents in 3 weeks this book will have passed through!
Yes, this book is traveling at a dizzy rate 'round the world! Arrived safely today and I'll get around to it ASAP. I have three rays in front it, oh dear, and my financial year end work commitments and watching the Tour de France is interfering with my reading at the moment!
I don't know what to make of this - I've read the first novella "The City of Glass" and found it strange. The ending did not really brought closure to the story. I have read a number of Auster's other book and found them great.
I'm putting this aside for a couple of days and reading something else then I'll give the rest a go. Bear with me - I'll finish it and send it on before the end of August
Finished it tonight - This imo is really not Auster's best and I simply don't have anything positive to write about it. "The Locked Room" - the last of the novellas in the book started out well but in the end, for me, simply faded and whimpered to an inconclusive ending.
Hope next in line will have more luck.
Thanks for sharing.

Posted to Caroley in the UK today by surface mail - thanks for sharing.
Received today thanks, and it'll be going to the top of the TBR pile as I have no other rings at the moment.
Thanks for the lovely note that was enclosed. I loved looking at all the photos on it. That'll go straight on my wall of postcards :-)
I finished the final story last night and have thoroughly enjoyed the whole book. I have no idea how to describe it as it was completely bizarre in places but just wonderful. I kept thinking I knew where each story was going and each time I was completely wrong. Brilliant! :-D
Thanks so much for sharing it Jen!
I've PMd kbmarsh for an address and hope to send it on its way asap.
01/09/09 - Was unable to contact kbmarsh so have PMd Katrinat, the next on the list.

Arrived yesterday, thanks for sending
Read the first story, City of Glass, and loved it. I haven't tome to read the others as I've kept this forever and bookrings are piling up (reading slump contines for 2 month...). Thanks for sharing this, I shall certainly be looking out for more of his stuff in the future.
I have the next address and will be posting this tomorrow in the hope of it arriving before the postal strike.
Thank you very much - I'll get to this as soon as I can.
Fushmush has asked to be skipped, so I'm waiting for an address from WigglyWoods.
I'm so sorry to have held this book up for so long. I had a load of bookrings come in at the same tine and I really don't think I'm going to get to it this side of Christmas.
It's unfair of me to hold it up any longer, so I'm going to pass it on to the next reader.
Got it in the mail around Christmas. Thanks for sharing. I've got a few ring books to read beforehand but I'll get on with this one as soon as I can and pass it straight on to the next reader.
Started reading this morning.
I finished the book yesterday and pretty much enjoyed. I couldn't really get into the second story but overall it's been a quite enjoyable read.
PMing AngelaPitcher so the ray goes on.
