Margaret Atwood is my favorite author of all time. I bought this book at Barnes and Noble a few years ago along with several of her other novels. While it is not my favorite Atwood novel it is still a great book that any Atwood fan would enjoy!

Arrived today! As soon as i finish my current read I'll start this, probably by the middle of the week. Looking forward to it, so far I've loved everything I've read by Atwood.

Another wonderful Atwood book! She is just so readable if you know what I mean, you start reading and before you know it you're halfway through the book! Her descriptions of characters are just so real, you can plainly see them in your mind's eye.

Well not sure exactly what I thought of this book...different than I usually read I guess. I didn't really like the characters that much either...seemed kind of boring to me. Thanks for sharing though!!!

This was a bit of a slow read for me - trying to absorb the characters motivations was a bit overwhelming.
I wasn't sure if Marian was anorexic or if her relationship with Peter was so unfulfilling that it ruined her self image thereby making her unable to satisfy her own needs.
I liked the book pretty well, although it took a few days to get into it. This is my second Atwood book and I have a third on the shelf. Thanks for sharing JenKazoo!

This was a strange one. It took a while to get into the story and feel like I knew the characters. It was just strange.

I just (5 minutes ago) finished this book. I tried to stay awake last night to finish it, but I just couldn't do it, too sleepy. Now wrapping the book up for its trip to blackadder75 in Pennsylvania.

This was a most peculiar story. I kept wishing I could stop wanting to eat, like Marian, maybe I'd lose a few pounds! There were so many strange things about the story -- she seemed so disassociated from her co-workers, her boyfriend, her parents. Then this strange guy Duncan seemed in turn to be both needy and uncaring about Marion. I don't know, I'm not sure I get the meaning of the entire thing, but I think I liked the ending.

If I had to summarize the overall meaning it had for me, I felt it was about Marian's rejection of the role she was expected to play as a woman in life, at work, as a soon-to-be wife. It might be similar to the experience or feelings of someone with anorexia? Anyway, altogether an interesting read.

I'm not quite sure what to say about this book. I love Atwood but found this book a little slow and strange. I'm not sure what to make of Marian's food crisis. I did love the end and how everything works out though.

Whew! I just finished this book today & already have the address. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to mail it out (& I leave on holiday tomorrow at the crack of dawn).

I sat down to start it last night, and I am already hooked. Came home from vacation and found this little guy awaiting me!

The best point about this book is the author's writing style itself, she draws you in and keeps you going! I'm not sure what to think after reading this book, though... such an interesting concept to write about. I'll have to think over it.

I enjoyed this book. I like the way that Margaret Atwood writes. I couldn't quite figure out for most of the story if Marian was reacting to her feelings about being engaged, if perhaps she was pregnant and having food aversions, or if she was mentally ill. She definitely had some strange behaviors.

Received this book last week - bit late in posting! Was intriged by the title - so far it's a good read

Just finished this book on this cold raining day. I really liked it - full symbolism and vivid characters. I think she did a great job on the ending - all the strings were tied up and nothing left hanging. Mmm makes me want to eat some cake! Have just PM'd the next reader on the ring.

Sorry I held on to this one so long...

Atwood is one of my favorite contemporary authors, but this tale fell a bit short for me, as well. This was another powerful work, filled with irony and metaphor, the storyline, however, just wasn't my cup of tea. I will say, though, that it made BOTH reads [I also read Edith Wharton's "The House of Mirth" at the same time] more interesting to juxtapose society's treatment of women and marriage in 1905 with that of 1969; also, a bit shocking in how little some things ever change.

As of Valentine's Day, this one is on its way to Carelaisa in Canada. (Thanks for sharing it, JenKazoo)

What an interesting read! I like the way the story was built and that one part was told in the 1st person narrator and another in the 3rd person narrator, as if someone was always following Marian, the main character. All her aversion of food ever since she became engaged was some sort of way to tell her that maybe it wasn't the right way of life for her... who knows. Maybe it made her realize things about her life. In any case, I liked the book and it won't stop me from reading other books by Margaret Atwood!

Arrived today! I think I'll be reading this on my vacation in the Dominican this month!

As mentioned, I took this on vacation and read it on the plane and the beach, so this book has also traveled to the Dominican Republic!

This story seemed to have a slow pace, yet it did keep me interested. It felt like a little flash back reading about Toronto and women's thought process in the 70s. This is far better than Atwood's Surfacing which is also one of her early books and is far more mundane. I liked Ainsley and the land-lady with "the child".
