"Synopsis
Hidden away in the Record Department of the sprawling Ministry of Truth, Winston Smith skilfully rewrites the past to suit the needs of the Party. Yet he inwardly rebels against the totalitarian world he lives in, which demands absolute obedience and controls him through the all-seeing telescreens and the watchful eye of Big Brother, symbolic head of the Party. In his longing for truth and liberty, Smith begins a secret love affair with a fellow-worker Julia, but soon discovers the true price of freedom is betrayal."

I've read it 20 years ago (in German), but should definitely try the English original as well. Thanks, calisson!

I finally managed to read it. It always takes me a while to actually pick up a classic and read it. I don't know why really - I seem to expect something utterly boring (maybe due to being forced to read classics in school) and usually they're really good. I guess they wouldn't become classics otherwise ;-)

The story - or should I say the topic - of 1984 is well known I guess and seems to become more and more relevant nowadays which is quite scary. I found part 1 of the book particularly interesting as I grew up in a socialist dictatorship (Eastern Germany) until I was 11. Some things in the book, the uniformity of what you're supposed to think, the youth camps to prepare children to become good party-abiding citizens, the fact that you didn't know whether your best friend/mother/brother/neighbour/... doesn't secretly work for the Stasi, the East German Secret Service (that is obviously something I only found out when I was older and didn't experience myself as a child) and that even children where used to find out whether their parents did anything forbidden reminded me a lot of what happened in East Germany before 1989.

Part 2 was nice to read because it gave that glimpse of hope. Part 3 I found a bit lengthy.
Altogether, a very good read.

Will let this travel as a Ring. Please read and pass on within 6 weeks. Thank you! Participants (order might change):

1. YogiSchoko (Germany) is offering to send the audiobook out with the book

The book already arrived at the end of last week. Thank you for sending it!

Edit 19.06.2013: Sorry for keeping the book that long. I tried several times during the last weeks, but could'nt get really into the book, even if it is surely an interesting one. When I decided to participate in the ring, my intention was reading this book and listening to my audiobook at the same time. But then I recognized that the audiobook is a slightly shortened version which didn't make it very easy to follow the line. I hope to get back to this story some day, but now the ring will travel on unfinished to dschinny.

Even though 1984 is well known I never got around to reading it. Glad I finally did but it was a bit depressing, I have to say. Some things he described as if Nazi-Germany, Mao's China, Stalin's Russia, Pol Pot's Cambodia and the old GDR have been combined in one...

Interesting thread in the Chit-Chat Forum on Orwell vs. Huxley: http://www.bookcrossing.com/forum/5/494842/

Will ask Samingo for the address.

28.7.2013 On its way to Samingo.

Thx for sending. The book arrived safely today. It will be read soon...

Edit, Oct 30th: sorry, it took me so long to start reading the book...
Although I knew the story, I anxiously wanted to read the book. The story is relevant and current still, again, more than ever(?). 'Big brother is watching you!' Yes, true!

As I received a copy of this as a RABCK, this is off to the next participant! Hope you enjoy and thanks for sharing.

I received it today. I will read it ASAP and send it to the next reader.

I think it is more a horror than a Sci-fi book and for me it was very disturbing as I kept remembering the life in my country (Argentina) around 1976-1982 where there was a dictatorship and people was kidnap and murder by Special Forces (army and police), they just “disappear”.

It is a great book , thanks for sharing this book and I´ll send it next week.
