The Red Tent
20 journalers for this copy...
From Amazon:
The red tent is the place where women gathered during their cycles of birthing, menses, and even illness. Like the conversations and mysteries held within this feminine tent, this sweeping piece of fiction offers an insider's look at the daily life of a biblical sorority of mothers and wives and their one and only daughter, Dinah. Told in the voice of Jacob's daughter Dinah (who only received a glimpse of recognition in the Book of Genesis), we are privy to the fascinating feminine characters who bled within the red tent. In a confiding and poetic voice, Dinah whispers stories of her four mothers, Rachel, Leah, Zilpah, and Bilhah--all wives to Jacob, and each one embodying unique feminine traits. As she reveals these sensual and emotionally charged stories we learn of birthing miracles, slaves, artisans, household gods, and sisterhood secrets. Eventually Dinah delves into her own saga of betrayals, grief, and a call to midwifery.
"Like any sisters who live together and share a husband, my mother and aunties spun a sticky web of loyalties and grudges," Anita Diamant writes in the voice of Dinah. "They traded secrets like bracelets, and these were handed down to me the only surviving girl. They told me things I was too young to hear. They held my face between their hands and made me swear to remember." Remembering women's earthy stories and passionate history is indeed the theme of this magnificent book. In fact, it's been said that The Red Tent is what the Bible might have been had it been written by God's daughters, instead of her sons. --Gail Hudson

I have it now
back to me
I have received this in the mail and I am excited to start reading it. I will PM the next person in liine so that they know the status
I have finished this book and I am pretty happy with it. It was very interesting and had a different spin on the stories that I have read in the Bible. I was a little disappointed that the stories I have read and known in the Bible were not accurate within this fictional tale of Dinah, but I guess that is how fictional writing goes!
I would recommend this to others, but it is not one of those books that I would read again.
I have PM Pell, just waiting for the address to send it to next and then it will be on its way!
Arrived safe and sound today, cant wait to read it, will start right away.
Although I couldnt stop reading this quite unusual book, I am not quite sure if I enjoyed it or not. I too kept refering to the biblical factors and they never always matched up. I would also recommend others to read it, they might find it exceptionally good. But thank you Spaceystacey for allowing me to join in this bookring and will be returning it to you asap.
Sorry its taken me a while to post off to Ethlarnold I havent been able to get to the Post Office, but posted it today from Italy

LOVED this book. I read it when I was in middle school and did NOT fully understand everything I read, so I am glad to have read this again with better comprehension. Anita Diamant's writing is so enjoyable to read: imagery and emotion make this book fantastic. I will PM dabercro and get it sent off soon!
Arrived in the mail today. It will go on the top of Mt. TBR.
I really enjoyed this book. A well written ficitional tale based very loosely on bible characters. Dinah's narration of the story really brought the story alive for me.
Thank you spaceystacey for sharing! Mailing the book today to mrsboknows in SC.
Book arrived today is is now 3rd in the TBR pile.
Beautiful, absolutely beautiful. There are no other words to describe this book. I absolutely couldn't put it down and am going to buy a copy for my permanent collection. Every woman should read this.

Yeah! the book arrived today and I was really starting to wonder if it had got lost in the mail. Why was I doubting good old seamail? It's never failed me before. The bad news is that, as usual, all bookring books seem to be turning up in the same week after a full 4 months of waiting, and waiting. So it might take me a while to get to this book but I'll try to have it moving again before Xmas. Thanks spaceystacey for organising the bookring and lidlekiwi for shipping it all the way over to Oz!
First of all sorry that it took me so long to read it. It was not only Christmas and the Summer school holidays, but I am also in the middle of changing jobs so life is very hectic and unfortunately does not allow much time for reading at the moment. Still it would have been a shame to miss this wonderful book. I had heard so much about it and was quite unsure about it at first, but I was hooked by page 50 and enjoyed every moment of it. It was like being a kid again and reading legends and tales. It's a gem and I'm recommending it to all my girlfriends! Thank you so much spaceystacey for taking the time to organise this bookring and share this book with us. It's now about to be shipped to wickedlazy in the UK.

This is not one of those books that you can read "in a heartbeat"; at least for me, it felt like that kind of book to which you need to dedicate a little more time, in order to fully enjoy it and understand it.
It was a delight to read it. The story made me feel proud to be a woman, as it revolves around the lives of such strong women. I liked the way the author picked up some biblical episodes to build a fictional plot. All in all, this is a great book, that kept me hooked and awoke my emotions.
Thanks for sharing, spaceystacey. I'll PM earthcaroleanne for her address and send this along sometime during the next couple of days.

Wow. Though a very sad book in many ways, it was very well done. I thought the author captured the time period extremely well, and, more importantly, she truly captured the meaning of being a woman in such a time. I put off reading this book for years, but I'm very glad I finally gave it a chance.
Now on to the next person!

I think a status update on this book is needed.
First I would like to apologize for having had this book for so long. I fell behind on rings/rays and have been having a terrible time catching up. I will have more time available and hope to use it to get caught up.
I have started the book and it will be my gym book (guaranteed one hour of reading a minimum of four days a week). I am enjoying the story so far.
June 7: Dinah has been born.
June 8: Approximately 1/3 of the way through the book. Jacob and his family our on the way to Cannan.
June 13: Busy weekend - not much time to read. Dinah has met Rebecca and is not impressed.
June 14: Dinah has cursed her father and brothers.

I wasn't sure when I first signed up for this ring but I had heard so many wonderful things about the book I decided to try it.
When I first started reading the book, it seemed to move very slowly. Then suddenly I was 1/3 of the way through the book and it just kept picking up speed and my annoyance with not being able to just sit and read grew and grew.
Dinah's tale brought stories from the Bible to life in a new way and gave me a greater appreciation for the hard work and struggles of women during that period. I very much enjoyed reading this book.
Thank you spaceystacey for offering the ring and for your patience. I will try to mail it out this weekend.
