Memoir about growing up in Edinburgh at the turn of the century
Caught at meetup last month. Thanks LinenPressLynn!
Unfortunately it turned out to not be my sort of book. I generally prefer plain prose to poetry and so the author's literary flourishes got on my nerves a bit. Sorry! Hopefully the next reader will appreciate it more.

Left on the book swop shelf
Found this in the office bookshelves. The comment on the back about 'an almost pagan reverence for nature' made me pick it up, despite LittleSuz's comment about the literary flourishes.
I really enjoyed the vignettes of life in Edinburgh in years past, especially those that concentrated on aspects of nature. Its nice sometimes to get the chance to look at this city as it used to be and never will be again. However, I wasn't overly fond of the flowery style, which I wouldn't describe as poetic (any good poet these days knows the value of economy with words) but just overwritten.
I found the book at the OBCZ during my Easter holiday and took it with me to Germany. The comments of the other readers do not sound good, but I'll give it a chance. After reading I will release it at the monthly Frankfurt Meet Up.

I got this book at the Frankfurt Meet-Up - I instantly liked it because of it's nice black-and-white cover.
I really liked the story of Marjories childhood. I have seldom read about the early 20th century, the time between 1910 und 1930, I mean. It was very interesting to read about the circumstances of life back then, written from the view of a child.
I took the book with me when I travelled to France on holiday 2 weeks ago. I think the book enjoyed the trip. I wanted to release it near a hill as described in the book, but I didn't find one. So I decided to take it with me to Switzerland instead :-)
