Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage: Stories

This book/writer was recommended to me by a professor teaching fiction writing at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee branch. I have enjoyed her other collection of short stories more than this one. They tend to be a bit of a downer; people don't quite connect. The stories are set in Canada and usually in the past, though it's not clear to me when exactly, maybe early 1900's?
In one story a young girl suddenly leaves her family to marry a much older, neighbor widow. The story is told from her stepsister's point of view. In another story, an unwanted spinster cousin comes to visit a woman's family and finds companionship with one of their odd friends. The most interesting story, in my opinion, is the one about the young woman who writes to man who has moved away from their small town. She is plain and past marrying age. He is broke and has been accused of stealing her furniture, I think. I can't remember now. Anyhow, she takes a long train journey with her new dress, thinking that they have had a correspondence and an understanding of their upcoming marriage. Turns out that a young girl has played a prank on her and has taken her letters to read and then responded on his behalf. So, the faraway gentleman has no knowledge of her expectations because he never really wrote. When she arrives, he is deathly sick and she goes to work helping him recover. He is destitute and in a god foresaken, tiny, dusty town. Somehow, they get married without ever having figured out the miscommunication and the snotty girl and her friend who meddled are amazed and awed by the circumstance.

I found this book at Borders Bookstore. Munro is an author I've heard lots about. However, I've never read a story she has written. Based on the strong recommendation here, I hope to read this book soon.
I received a PM from janaqq that said she would like to read this book when I finish it. I will move it up my TBR mountain!

I've tried reading this book several times and I can't seem to get into it. The rule for clothes is to give away anything you haven't worn in a year. I'm going to apply that rule also to books.
I'm sending this book off today in the Already Been Bookcrossed Bookbox in hopes it will find a new home where it won't collect dust.
