Dancing with the Dead: Journey Through Zanzibar and Madagascar
1 journaler for this copy...
Helena Drysdale was leaving for Madagascar when family papers in a crumbling house in Devon revealed that her ancestors traded there during the nineteenth century. There were hints of piracy and slave trading. Madagascar was not their only haunt: there was also Zanzibar, with its plump sultans, and the Comoro Islands. Helena, and her photographer husband, Richard Pomeroy, set off to follow in their wake, and seek out any lingering family connections.
A really terrific find! There aren't many books on Madagascar out there to begin with, but Drysdale, and her husband, Richard, "go with flow" with the situations encountered, traveling through a culture chock full of "fady" (taboos) - which can (and often do) change from place to place.
