Harry Bosch is up to his neck in a case that has transfixed all of celebrity-mad Los Angeles: a movie director is charged with murdering an actress during sex, and then staging her death to make it look like a suicide. Bosch is both the arresting officer and the star witness in a trial that has brought the Hollywood media pack out in full-throated frenzy.
Meanwhile, Terry McCaleb is enjoying an idyllic retirement on Catalina Island when a visit from an old colleague brings his former world rushing back. It's a murder, the unreadable kind of murder he specialized in solving back in his FBI days. The investigation has stalled, and the sheriff's office is asking McCaleb to take a quick look at the murder book to see if he turns up something they've missed.
McCaleb's first reading of the crime scene leads him to look for a methodical killer with a taste for rituals and revenge. As his quick look accelerates into a full-sprint investigation, the two crimes — his murdered loner and Bosch's movie director — begin to overlap strangely. With one unsettling revelation after another, they merge, becoming one impossible, terrifying case, involving almost inconceivable calculation. McCaleb believes he has unmasked the most frightening killer ever to cross his sights. But his investigation tangles with Bosch's lines, and the two men find themselves at odds in the most dangerous investigation of their lives.

And… and… it arrived accompanied by some of the most delicious substance in the world – Dark Chocolate, this bar with macaroon nibs in it – how on earth did you know mallary that I am an dark chocolate addict! (((YAHOO))) So many reasons for me to celebrate today, exotic chocolate and I am so thrilled to get this being a great fan of the Harry Bosch series and this was on my wish list. Oh, happy day!

Hummm… here I sit contemplating what other books I can find to send you as a swap for a dark chocolate bar with cocoa nibs in it, a treat I cannot seem to get my paws on in Scotland! Oh, this BookCrossing lark sure brings some unexpected delights with it! Thanks again mallary!

Book cover: Terry McCaleb’s enforced quiet lifestyle on the island of Catalina is a far cry from the hectic excitement of his former role as an FBI profiler. However, when small-time criminal Edward Gunn is found dead, McCaleb becomes embroiled in a disturbing and complex case, leading him to cross the path of Harry Bosch. This infamous detective has always teetered on the brink of darkness in order to get inside the head of the killer. Is it possible that he has stepped across that finely drawn line and embraced darkness?

OK loved this and finished reading it on my birthday last year July the 30th. Apologies to you Mallary and Tuttasb for only getting round to completing a review now! It’s my fatal flaw, perfectionism. Some, not understanding the true nature of perfectionism, assume that perfectionists do everything perfectly. Not so, the greater number of we perfectionists, I’m coming out here, manage on a sadly daily basis to not even start tasks if we feel for some reason, [any reason, apparently], we will not achieve perfection. [Here, I throw my hands up in despair, been there done that!] Much goes undone in many perfectionists lives. This leads to me to the issue of my not having written a review for this book despite having been energised and excited by it when I read it in July 2008. I noted the date of finishing it on my reading log but as I was anticipating not being able to do justice to the book in a review, I never got a review written at the time. However, I did make notes so here goes, in the interests of speed, [I’ll only tinker a wee bit…] my notes;

Brilliant to have two of Connelly’s excellent characters come together in the same plot, McCaleb and Bosch. This was a dynamic mix of court room procedural and dramatic action. It was rather tortuous as the tension wracked up as I struggled with both Bosch and McCaleb as they raced to untangle this Machiavellian plot and to uncover the spider at the centre of this ghastly web and equally importantly uncover evidence to convict this perpetrator. Breathless Connelly race, good as ever!

Great to finally get a review for this written, I had various plans for it, which one to follow up on? OK it seems my sister has got a copy of this now so it is available for another reader.

Connelly does it again! A captivating read, disturbing story. Not only a perfect criminal story, but also much insight in the struggles of Terry and Harry to do the right thing, make the right decisions and not fall to the dark side.
