This was one of the best books that I read in 2007. I thought that it was perhaps the most honest book I've read and managed to capture the helplessness and lost feelings of grief beautifully.

Reserved for Best of 2007 swap. Mailed to Lizabeth on Feb. 14, 2008.

Journal Entry 2 by Lizabeth86 from Middletown, Connecticut USA on Saturday, February 16, 2008
I happily won this in the BEST OF 2007 Swap. Looking forward to reading it.

Journal Entry 3 by Lizabeth86 from Middletown, Connecticut USA on Saturday, February 23, 2008
I can see why this book was picked as a BEST READ. It is so beautifully written that you feel like you are going through the grieving process along with Joan. It is a very honest and very raw look of Joan's feelings and observations of the year following the death of her husband and the illness of her only child.

I am always amazed when I find myself reading a non-fiction book (and loving it) because it is not my normal genre of reading (my grandparents would be so proud :-)). I also continue to be very impressed with MsJoanna's selection in books. I still have another one of her books that I am so looking forward to reading but which has not yet made it out of my TBR mountain.

Safely received in Australia! I'm really pleased to have a chance to read this wishlist book! However, as I've just finished two days professional development on trauma and bereavement... I might let this one languish on Mt TBR for a little while until I'm ready to tackle it!

Journal Entry 6 by winglmn60wing at Spotswood, Victoria Australia on Sunday, July 15, 2012
What an extraordinary book... heartbreakingly honest in its examination of grief and beautifully written.
I was really engaged and moved by Didion's memoir of this traumatic time in her life - and also impressed by her resilience and honesty.
Thank you so much for sharing this one with me... I'll make sure it's passed on to another reader who will appreciate its power.

A very personal memoir of the author's life and immense grief after the death of her husband as well as the terrible illness of her only daughter. She struggled to come to terms with normal life and everything she did, reminded her of John and the things they had done together particularly during their last year together.
Very honestly and bravely told, I as the reader, felt her grief and the great difficulty she had in coming to terms with the fact that her partner of 40 years was never coming back.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

A sad and poignant book from one of America's iconic writers abut a very difficult time in her life when her husband dies suddenly the night before New Year's Eve, and her daughter is in an induced coma and on life support. She tells of her feelings and grief in losing her husband and soulmate and having to deal with her daughter's illness, and whether she would live or die. I could totally relate to how bereft she felt as I felt the same after losing my husband in a car accident when my daughter was only a baby. She describes so well that fog you live in in those first few months afterwards. it is beautifully written.
To be released at meetup
