Journal Entry 1 by Frangipani04 on Saturday, February 02, 2008
This book was standing on my bookshelve for some time. I was tempted to read it several times, but recently there has been always a bookring or a friend's book first on the list. But as now I see that someone else may want it, I started reading it and... well, it was over in 5 reading hours. By definition, a page turner. The setting reminded me of Light on Snow, though the plot is completely different. It gives us a lot to think about the secrets everyone holds within. It made me think about something that has been on my mind lately: no matter how many good friends we make as adults, our really reall closest friends are those that we grew up with. Those are people that define us, to whom we really opened up with, without all "grown up" restrictions that we now have... Ok, this is rambling. The book will be a gift to my Birthday Buddy!

Arrived this morning. Thank you so much. You couldn't have chosen a better book for me as I love Anita Shreve's books! I'm really looking forward to reading this.

I found this more difficult to get into than previous Anita Shreve books. Initially, I felt Agnes' story of Innes and the Halifax Catastrophe detracted from the main story but then, as I knew nothing of what had occured there in 1917, found that interesting. Overall an enjoyable read but I was a little disappointed that the secrets revealed weren't a bit more shocking.

Arrived safe and sound today. I'm not a huge Anita Shreve fan, but want to read this book for the Halifax storyline. :) Thank you!
