Journal Entry 1 by raeliz64 from Leicester, Leicestershire United Kingdom on Friday, February 01, 2008
From Amazon - "Stark and forbidding, Jamaica Inn stands alone on bleak Bodmin Moor, its very walls tainted with corruption. Young Mary Yellan soon learns of her uncle Joss Merlyn's strange trade here - but does he deal in blacker secrets still?" I read this years ago and to be honest I can't remember a darn thing about it!

Mary Yellan's Mother's dying wish was for Mary to go and live with her Aunt and Uncle. However, she finds them residing at the forbidding Jamaica Inn. Mary's Uncle is a large and intimidating character who drinks to drown his sorrows and guilt at his crimes. Her Aunt is a woman who has become a reflection of her former self after years of being downtrodden. Mary is the strong character inbetween who is determined to put things right and in doing so save her Aunt from her appalling existence. Mary also falls in love along the way. Du Maurier vividly and hauntingly portrays the harsh life living on the moors. All the characters are well established and believable. There are plenty of times in the story where you are gripped by the suspense, particularly the night on the beach. You know you are in for a dark read and it delivers, though it does have the feeling that any moment it could teeter into a bodice-ripper. Sometimes the story is a little slow, particularly during the first half, but this is a minor point. The ending is also rather predictable, but does not spoil a good yarn.

thanks so much for the wish granted! I really appreciate it. (I also love the idea of printing your own note cards with your photos - I looked at some of your flickr photos and they are amazing!) I will journal again when I have finished reading this.
