FROM THE BACK OF THE BOOK:
Miracles and passion abound in this mesmerizing novel--everywhere hailed as a masterwork--the story of a young woman whose gifts as a healer lend her the aura of a saint, and who must come to terms with a surprising destiny as all of Mexico rises in revolution, crying out her name.

This story was absolutely fantastic! I chose to read it because I needed to try a new author whose last name begins with a "U" for the Author A-Z Reading Challenge. I kept putting off starting it because it is just under 500 pages long, and I don't usually enjoy long books anymore. This story grabbed me from page one. It's beautifully written and so engaging - I couldn't put it down. The fact that Teresita Urrea was a real person and the story is family folklore for the author makes it all the more interesting. It's definitely my favorite read of the year so far.

I am sending this out on a mini bookring, which I am keeping to just 3 participants:

- elle311 (Virginia) - done
- ivylibra224 (Missouri) - done
- Stacers1973 (Oregon) - it's here
- back to me, time-traveler in NY

I am finally finished with this wonderful book! Like time-traveler, I too was a little worried with it being a long book and even PM'd her to say that I may not get to finish it because life keeps getting in the way, but I am glad I did. I love stories that take you to other places in time, and show you how people in other cultures live. Urrea's descriptions were so vivid, I could see clearly in my mind the characters, places, and especially the food! My favorite scene was when Teresita, the main character is visited by Huila, her teacher, in what seems to be a dream. They are looking at what appear to be the stars. Teresita doesn't understand what they are looking at and Huila explains: "It is you, every possible you. Forever, you are surrounded by countless choices of which you are to be. These are your destinies. She goes on to say "You are always in a universe of choices. Any moment of your life can go in any direction you choose." Teresita asks how and is told, "Learn to see. This is your life, what it looks like to God"..."Most of us trudge in a straight line. All day, every day, we march like sheep." She is told that sometimes we have to look to the side. Such words of wisdom...

Thank you time-traveler for sharing with me! Will soon be on its way to ivylibra224.

I'm so sorry I've had this book for so long. The first copy was removed from my possession at work. I replaced it and finally finished this beautiful story! I'm so glad I stuck with it. I had a difficult time getting into it in the beginning, but it is definitely worth the read!! I'm PMing Stacers1973 and will get this book out ASAP.

There are now 2 books with this BCID! They both have the same title/author/etc. I replaced the lost copy with another, put the same BCID on it (ok'd by time-traveller) and am sending it off to the next participant. Thanks again for your understanding, time-traveller! And the patience of Stacers!

This was a very touching story ... it showed the turmoil of the times in which it was set, it showcased the love between family, and made clear not every agent of a corrupt government is corrupt. I loved the dreaming bits and the many small details that made the story so rich and strong and real. I liked the way Teresita forged relationships with people and how many of them regarded her as a force of goodness even as she mystified them.
I had a hard time getting into the book at first but as my page count slowly progressed the story flowed and I became more and more enthralled with finding out the many surprises that were waiting.
Thank you for including me in this ring, I really enjoyed the gift of this story.
