From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Gilbert (The Last American Man) grafts the structure of romantic fiction upon the inquiries of reporting in this sprawling yet methodical travelogue of soul-searching and self-discovery. Plagued with despair after a nasty divorce, the author, in her early 30s, divides a year equally among three dissimilar countries, exploring her competing urges for earthly delights and divine transcendence. First, pleasure: savoring Italy's buffet of delights--the world's best pizza, free-flowing wine and dashing conversation partners--Gilbert consumes la dolce vita as spiritual succor. "I came to Italy pinched and thin," she writes, but soon fills out in waist and soul. Then, prayer and ascetic rigor: seeking communion with the divine at a sacred ashram in India, Gilbert emulates the ways of yogis in grueling hours of meditation, struggling to still her churning mind. Finally, a balancing act in Bali, where Gilbert tries for equipoise "betwixt and between" realms, studies with a merry medicine man and plunges into a charged love affair. Sustaining a chatty, conspiratorial tone, Gilbert fully engages readers in the year's cultural and emotional tapestry--conveying rapture with infectious brio, recalling anguish with touching candor--as she details her exotic tableau with history, anecdote and impression.

4 out of 10

I really tried to like this book but in the end, I failed miserably. The author came across to me as a poor-little-rich-girl on a self-absorbed sabbatical of supposed self-discovery. She leaves her marraige, on what seems like a whim, immediately gets involved with another man, constantly bashes her ex-husband, and pines over the end of the relationship with the other guy. It just felt really shallow to me.

She then proceeds to eat her way through Italy, see nothing of India but an ashram, and then barges in on a senile medicine man in Bali. Oh, and did I mention she got paid to do all of this? I think that is where my biggest issues with this book lie. Soul-searching on someone else's dime...where do I sign up?

While her character did grow in some ways, this book held very little depth or discovery for me. Richard from Texas was entertaining, as short as his appearance was.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to judge this book for myself, k00kaburra! I've emailed skizeye9 and will journal again as soon as the book has been sent on.

UPDATE 7/25: Still no word from skizeye9. Will PM once more and then try the next on the list if no response.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

I really enjoyed this book. I had to push through it at times--it just doesn't grab me the way a fiction narrative does. But the real-life characters she meets in her travels are definitely entertaining, and there are moments of brilliant insight. My fave--she's reading an article in Italian on polished wood floors, eating a perfect little meal pulled together from local markets, and in her mind her hubbie asks her "You uprooted everything for this?" And she's like A) it's not your business anymore and B) YES. And she's in this perfect moment of contentedness and happiness. This book definitely made me think about my life and what I want to get out of it and making sure I don't look focus of that and my own independence (although my marriage is very happy), you can lose sight of your own needs and desires.

10 out of 10

Got it, read it, loved it! There are so many things I loved about this book and so many things taht seemed to speak directly to me in each of her journeys. The one that resonates the most is found on page 216 "Flexibility is just as essential for divinity as discipline. Your job, should you choose to accept it, is to keep searching for the metaphors, rituals, and teachers that will help you move ever closer to divinity."
