*A Thousand Splendid Suns

Mariam is only fifteen when she is sent to Kabul to marry the troubled and bitter Rasheed, who is thirty years her senior.Nearly two decades later in a climate of growing unrest, tragedy strikes fifteen-year-old Laila, who must leave her home and join Mariam's unhappy household. Laila and Mariam are to find consolation in each other, their friendship to grow as deep as the bond between sisters, as strong as the ties between mother and daughter.
With the passing of time comes Taliban rule over Afghanistan, the streets of Kabul loud with the sound of gunfire and bombs, life a desparate struggle against starvation, brutality and fear, the women's endurance tested beyond their worst imaginings. Yet love can move a person to act in unexpected ways, lead them to overcome the most daunting obstacles with a startling heroidm. In the end it is love that triumphs over death and destruction.

I think I put off reading this for a while suspecting that this second novel would not be as good as Hosseini's first effort. Boy, was I wrong. This is even better than "The Kite Runner". I also have to admit to getting quite emotional at the end.

I couldn't believe this was on the table at today's meet in Sadler's, as it's on my wishlist. Korky and I both spotted it, and very kindly Korky let me take it home, and I will pass it on once I've read it.

Am passing this on to Korky.
I loved this book. The main female characters were very convincing. I thought the history and social history of Afghanistan was interesting and after starting knowing sod all I came away with some knowledge.

The story is of Mariam and Laila, two women thrown together by circumstance who demonstrate in heart-rending fashion the triumph of the human spirit in the midst of the tragedy of Afghanistan since the 1970's.
I was just about in tears when I finished this book. In my view this will be seen as one of the outstanding books of the 21st century.

Well I thought this might be a bit of a 'worthy' read, but after my mum and dad praising it I pushed it to the top of my TBR pile. I enjoyed this very much too despite some of it being rather hard to read, Rasheed's mental and physical cruelty in particular. A very thought provoking and moving read, I'd thoroughly recommend this.

I finally got round to reading this in January as we did it for my reading group. It was every bit as good as I hoped it would be. I have recommended it to just about everybody! It is a very harrowing read, and just as I thought it couldn't get any worse, and that things were getting better - things got worse! It was very enlightening to read about people living through the wars in Afghanistan. Despite the unpleasant things contained within these pages, I am amazed at the strength of the human spirit showing through, which tugged at my heart strings as I read. Lastly, I congratulate the author on managing to end it on a positive note. Get reading!

Wow! This is quite a book! It is very harrowing and at times it's almost too hard to read. I felt like I needed to be able to hide behind a cushion. But the honesty of the book works perfectly and I came out the other side feeling uplifted, wiser and more understanding, both of the political situation and of the human spirit.
Fantastic read.
Thanks, Retromonkey, for passing this on to me. I've had a look to see whose wishlist this appears on and am waiting for a response so I can RABCK it to continue its journey.

Thank you very much, I enjoyed (if you can use that word) The Kite Runner so I'm quite intrigued to read this one.
