From the Back Cover
A decent, harried young banker travels north to Scotland and his mysteriously troubled sister. A single mother struggles to make a home for her family in a society she only vaguely comprehends. A baby girl is abandoned in a bus station and picked up by a stranger. A caller leaves threatening messages.
Brilliantly structured and tense, Criminals shows how the best intentions can have the worst results - and how families pull together, form themselves anew, and, occasionally, tear themselves apart.
'A stunning tour de force, suspenseful, beautifully observed...a wonderfully ironic meditation on the marriage of seemingly random trajectories known as fate...a great read and a literary pleasure' Jayne Anne Phillips
'One of the strongest and subtlest voices in Scottish fiction' Glasgow Herald
'Extremely compelling...superbly crafted' Time Out

Absolutely fabulous... writing style reminiscent of Patricia Highsmith, though more morally ambiguous. Reserved for my 2008 International Secret Santa recipient.

It’s Christmas Eve. Santa had visited our house while we were visiting graveyard (two, actually) and lightning candles on graves on our beloved. It’s one of the Finnish Christmas traditions. And, of course, Santa visiting you on Christmas Eve is another one.
Anyway, Santa had left a big pile of packages for us. Among them, there was also these three (!) packages from my Secret Santa, AliceF as I can see now.
Thank you so very, very much, AliceF!
These two books I got have something in common: On her acknowledgements, Margot Livesey says, among other things, ”My greatest debt is to Andrea Barrett, without whom this novel would not exist.” — The other book I got from my Secret Santa, is this. Cool. :)

MERRY CHRISTMAS
&
HAPPY NEW YEAR,
ALICEF!!!
