The story, "Lyra and the Birds", begins when Lyra and Pantalaimon spot a witch's daemon called Ragi being pursued over the rooftops of Oxford by a frenzied pack of birds. The daemon heads straight for Lyra and is given shelter. The creature was given Lyra's name as somebody who might help. The daemon is seeking one Sebastian Makepeace--an alchemist living in a part of Oxford known as Jericho. Together Lyra and Pan try to guide the daemon to the home of this man, but it is a journey fraught with more danger than they had at first anticipated.

A very quick read, but a very enjoyable addition to the Dark Materials Trilogy.
It's good to read another tale from Lyra.

Thank you very much for this wonderful surprise cally-c!

I devoured it greedily yesterday afternoon and enjoyed the other bits and pieces as well as the story.
At the last Cardiff meet several non-readers of fantasy discussed why we could cope with some but not most: it's to do with there being a consistent universe which, while different from ours, obeys a coherent set of physical and social rules. The additional material in this little volume supports and extends the world of His Dark Materials. I had good fun comparing the names of the Oxford colleges on Pullman's map to their real names - can't say I worked out the rationale behind them all, but I enjoyed All Souls being transformed into St Scholastica's (not just because it seems appropriate for a post-graduate only college, but also because I have a soft spot for Benedict's sister) and was unsurprised to note the non-existence of my own college amongst others ... but then Keble, Pusey, Newman et al would have had nothing to protest at in Pullman's World, would they?
The politics on the back of the map reminded me of the world of Thursday Next. I think the similarity they have in my head was described best in an interview I saw with someone who had made props for the film - there are aspects of modernity combined with earlier ideas evolved to a greater extent than they had a chance to here, where they were supplanted by technologies missing from the fantasy worlds.

Spike1972 would like to read this, so I am reserving it for him.

Oopsy! I should have journalled this ages ago (seeing as I read it ages ago..).

I did enjoy this little spin-off, although it took me a while to get back into the swing of the characters, after recently having read the The Ruby In The Smoke series, by the same author.

I'll ask CaterinaAnna what's to happen next with it.

Picked up at the Cherry Tree, lovely top see you both, Spike and CaterinaAnna!!

I've only read one of the Northern Lights books (to my shame ... must read the rest sometime) but have wanted to read this for a while, not least because I live close to Oxford. This wi9ll be put pretty high in Mount TBR and I've promised to pass it on to gingergeoff once I'm done.

Chelseagirl passed this to me, and I enjoyed another quick outing with Lyra and Pantaleimon.

I will now contact gingergeoff to see if he would still like it.

OK I have to explain why this book disappeared into the ether!

We are moving house soon and I have sorted out a lot of books to move on, including this one, but I had a nagging feeling that I was meant to have passed it on to someone specific. I thought it was spike1972, and had got as far as acquiring his address and labelling a jiffy bag, but then I checked the journal entry and spotted it came to me from spike and it was actually heading for gingergeoff!

Think this is what happened. I read the book (really enjoyed it as far as I remember!) and then put it on my shelf and forgot to do anything with it. Sorry! Then we moved house and when I unpacked my books I found this and passed it on to herrgirl to pass on to gingergeoff at a meeting, but he wasn't there and she gave it back to me so I could post it to him. And then it sat on my new bookshelf for a few years, until I came across it now.

Anyway, I now have gingergeoff's address and the book is ready to move on. It may have taken me nearly seven years but it will get there eventually!

Thanks for the book Chelseagirl. I'm looking forward to reading it and also letting my son read it as he has been studying Phillip Pullman and the frozen north at school.
