A well written story about a young woman who falls in love with a woman. Appparently one of few books at the time where a lesbian relationship had a happy ending. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Really love the cover on this book. Picked it up at the Perth BC Meetup on Buttercup's reccommendation. Looking forward to reading it!!
I think the description on the front cover, 'A document of persecuted love', describes this book perfectly. I also love part of the description on the back: 'full of tremor and of threat'. While I'm not sure how well I connected with the main premise of the novel - Therese just *finding* Carol in a department store and more or less instantly falling in love with her (and vice versa for Carol) - I really liked how their affair developed. I felt a growing sense of dread as they become entagled in Carol's divorce and the custody battle for her daughter. Given the time at which the novel is set, it seems impossible that things can end happily and it's a tribute to Highsmith that the ending (which I won't spoil by describing) surprised me. Despite of the dread i felt, this book is very quiet and understated and the ending even more so, with everything resolved in the final paragraph. Its full impact probably didin't hit until I read Highsmith's afterword in which she describes how she came to write the book and also the response she's had from readers since it was published. It's probably its historical context that I found most interesting (though the book is very well written).
And now, finally, I can send this off to crimson-tide, who has been waiting patiently for this book as part of the VBBOz since August. It's packed up and will be in the post tomorrow. Sorry it's taken so long!!

Thanks KLL. Don't ever worry about any delay in sending me books - you should see my groaning TBR shelves!
This was apparently first published in the USA in 1952 with the title The Price of Salt, and under the pseudonym of Claire Morgan.
Looking forward to reading it.

A lovely book. Written with tenderness and subtlety about discovering (illicit) love, and discovering oneself. The tension and anxiety between Therese and Carol is so well written, it's palpable.
Now off to jeniwren.
