Captain Corelli's Mandolin

One of my all time favourites. Couldn't leave this extra copy in the charity shop where I found it, so thought I would start a bookray to introduce Louis de Bernieres to anyone unlucky enough not to have found him already! A funny, emotional story written beautifully. Don't be put off if you've seen the fim; the book is much better.
'It is 1941 and Captain Antonio Corelli, a young Italian officer, is posted to the Greek island of Cephallonia as part of the occupying forces. At first he is ostracised by the locals, but as a conscientious but far from fanatical soldier, whose main aim is to have a peaceful war, he proves in time to be civilised, humourous - and a consummate musician.
When the local doctor's daughter's letters to her fiance - a member of the underground - go unanswered, the working of the eternal triangle seems inevitable. But can this fragile love survive as a war of bestial savagery gets closer and the lines are drawn between invader and defender?'

Absolutely brilliant it says on the front and I totally agree. This book has had me laughing out loud one moment and my eyes filled with tears the other. I love how it goes from historical events, to personal lives. And how the story switches from person to person. But most of all I enjoyed the lovestory of captain Corelli and Pelagia.
Definitely one of my new favourite books.

One of the best books I've read since joining Bookcrossing. I had not know much about what WWII was like in Greece so I learned something new while enjoying a well written book. I put it on my recommended list on my bookshelf--in fact, I liked it so much may have to go out and buy a copy for myself!
I have sent a PM to the next person in the bookring but am still waiting for a response.

I had a terrible time getting into this book and almost gave up on it more than once. For whatever reason, I decided to keep with it and hope for the best and can honestly say I am glad I did. Around the 200th page the story suddenly gets interesting, the characters become real and I found myself wanting the best for all of them, even little Psipsina. It turns out that to be a beautiful love story mixed in with the atrocities that only war can provide. Like readers before me, I found myself laughing at sections and crying at others. All in all a very good book provided you can get past the first 200 pages. :)
Will be putting this in the mail to Loriped tomorrow!

In the mail as of noon (EST) today. Thank you for sharing!
Received in the mail today. I need to finish the book I just started and then I will get to this one. Thanks for including me.
Just to let everyone know I am about a quarter of the way through this book and hope to have it finished in the next week or so. I will contact the next person for their address so I am ready to mail it off when finished.
After struggling through the first half of the book, I finally was able to get connected to the characters and the story. I think I would have enjoyed the story more if I had had the time to really savor it. Reading in the middle of my school year when I have so many demands on my time didn't give me the time to reflect on the developement of the story. However, towards the end I found myself connecting to the characters and enjoying their story. Will be sending this back to esq228 this week.
Book has arrived safely back at "home." Will get to it ASAP and then probably release it again :)
