Paperback.

Synopsis:

Amid the shifting world of San Francisco flea markets, shady vendors sell junk, precious antiques, and stolen goods side by side. Somewhere in the mix, a priceless collection of sacred Torah scrolls is gathering dust - and attracting a group of fanatical killers.

When private investigator Sharon McCone helps one flea market kingpin fend off a stalker, she's drawn into the netherworld of deal-making and thievery, a dangerous milieu seldom seen by outsiders. For her client Willie Whelan, the sidewalk sales are a game: trick the customer, outsell the competition, and stay one step ahead of the cops. But Willie's enemies have something more sinister in mind - a conspiracy so heinous it threatens the religious artifacts, Willie's freedom, and McCone's life.

I enjoyed this book until I discovered the reason for the Torah thefts, which seemed really .. dare I say it.. lame. Also, Sharon McCone falls victim once again to the PI-woman stereotype of not especially thinking matters through, becoming a hostage by one of the predators and naturally, needs to mention her boyfriend all the time.

Kept me reading, though, and loved the information about the different neighborhoods and districts in San Francisco.

San Francisco setting - looks interesting! Taking this one from the He-man bookbox; many thanks!

Later: I enjoyed some of the local details, but I definitely felt a disconnect with the "hard-boiled" main character - if only the cover blurb had not referred to her that way I think I'd have liked her a bit better {wry grin}. I felt she switched between screwball and cozy, with only a few nods to anything approaching actual hard-boiled detective-hood. [I had to chuckle when one of the villains tells her how bad a job she's doing!] The solution to the mystery was a bit of a letdown too, but I had fun along the way.

This was a fun read! I've never read anything by this author before. It reminds me of the Sue Grafton character Kinsey Milhone. I will have to look for more by this author.

It's kind of funny this was in my husband Lumbermoose's Mystery bookbox at one time! :-)

Saved for a bookbox.
