Absolutely briliant, thought provoking book was recommended to me by a friend when I told them I hadn't seen the film she told me I realy had to read the book first.

bit from the back as I don't want to give to much away.

On the hottest day of the summer of 1935, 13 year old Briony Tallis sees her sister Cecilia strip off her clothes and plunge int the fountain in the farden of her country house. Watchin her is Robbie Turner, her childhood friend who, like Cecilia, has recently come down from Cambridge.

By the end of that day the lives of all three wil have been changed for ever. Robie and Cecilia will have crossed a boundry they ahd not even imagnied at its start, and will have become victims of the younger girl's imagination. Briony will have witnessed mysteries and committed a crime for which she will spend the rest of her lie trying to atome.

Hmmm... How do I put this? What!?!?!? I can't say much else about my thoughts on the book or I will spoil it for future readers...

I do like the way McEwan paints a picture that completely draws you into the story. Unfortunately, Briony really bothered me from the start so her chapters felt a little long. :-) I did enjoy the writing style and would've scored it higher if it had ended differently.

I have Kasoswife's address and will post today.

PS - Thank you, Smurphie for the goodies! :-)

I have finally finished this book and I am still a bit confused. Maybe I missed something, but I don't understand!!! This sounds silly, but I am going to rent the movie tonight and see how that plays out.

It was an interesting read, except I didn't enjoy Briony or Paul Marshall. The both got on my nerves right away. I really enjoyed Cecilia and Robbie, although I wish there was more of their romance in the book. I am mailing this off tomorrow to elpis, I hope you enjoy this!!

nice reading especially after seeing the movie. i liked the fact that in the book i found more detailed descriptions on heroes' personality (such as Tallis mother). i was only tired reading the second chapter the one with war description .
i''ll post this to frangipani some day during next week.
thanks smurphie

Ian McEwan is one of my favourite authors, but this was not my favourite book by him. I don't know if it was because I had seen the movie before, and so was not so engaged by the plot as would be otherwise. But the book in itself is highly original and very well conceived. I agree that, compared to the movie, it was a great way to go deep into the characters personalities.

I'm Pming Icila for her address. Thanks for sharing it, Smurphie.

Somehow I'd expected more from the book, but then again I really liked the ending and I have to admit it was surprising.
Thanks for sharing!!!

I finished this book this afternoon. I hadn't seen the film so I had no previous knowledge of the story.I liked the way that the book was written in different parts and the characters of Robbie and Cecelia.I would like to read a book by the same author and see how that compares with this one.I have rated this an eight as I couldn't decide whether it was due a 7 or 8.I will pass this book on to ArabellaFigg in a few days time - unfortunately there wasn't a package to pass on as well as intended by Smurphie when the ring began - maybe because the envelope was split slightly ?

Journal Entry 21 by ArabellaFigg from Hull, East Yorkshire United Kingdom on Tuesday, March 31, 2009

Journal Entry 24 by 24-7-365Reader on Friday, June 5, 2009
I am sending this book back home to Smurphie, I have tried a couple of times to read it, but just can't seem to get into it, I find Briony annoying, and wish there was more of Cecilia and Robbie, I have seen the film so maybe that spoilt it a bit for me. I don't really like giving up on a book but I have another Bookray waiting for me.

Thanks for sharing though
