Journal Entry 1 by ReetPetite from Beeston, Nottinghamshire United Kingdom on Friday, January 11, 2008
Dexter Morgan isn't exactly the kind of man you'd bring home to your mum. At heart, he's the perfect gentleman: he has a shy girlfriend, and seems to lead a quiet, normal life bordering on the mundane. Despite the fact that he can't stand the sight of blood, he works as a blood-spatter analyst for the Miami police. But Dexter also has a secret hobby: he is an accomplished serial killer. So far, he's killed 36 people and has never been caught because he knows exactly how to hide the evidence. And while that may lead some people to assume he's not such a nice guy, he tempers his insatiable hunger for brutality by only killing the bad guys. However, Dexter's well-organised life is suddenly disrupted when a second, much more visible serial killer appears in Miami. Intrigued that the other killer favours a style similar to his own, Dexter soon realises that the mysterious new arrival is not simply invading his turf but offering him a direct invitation to 'come out and play'...

I love the TV series so I thought I'd read the book.
It's an enjoyable read, witty & sharp.
They changed the story for the series but both good.

Arrived safe and sound. Many thanks.

Like previous journaler, I came to this book via the TV series. I was interested to see how they compared. I ffeel the same about both, whilst neither will ever go down as a favourite, I enjoy both enough to keep me wanting more. The story is similar enough to be familiar, though changed enough to be intriguing, I look forward to further installments.

Journal Entry 6 by karen07814 from Colchester, Essex United Kingdom on Tuesday, May 12, 2009
Ok so I started with an advantage, I had no idea it related to a TV programme and definitely haven't seen it. It was a refreshing change from some of the books I've read recently which required concentration although if I had concentrated maybe it wouldn't have taken me until 10 pages from the end to guess the whodunnit element.
A crime thriller but more thriller than gore now on it's way to the next participant, thanks for sharing.

over to you from here....

Journal Entry 8 by wingdark-dracowing from Ledbury, Herefordshire United Kingdom on Saturday, May 16, 2009
Received today - can't wait to read as I started watching the TV series and thought it was cool. Unfortunately I missed most of the first season and haven't watched the current one at all, so finding out how it all ended will be great. It also means I can cross something of my scarily large wishlist that seems to multiply every day! Thanks for orgainising this - I'll let you know what I think of it ASAP.

Journal Entry 9 by wingdark-dracowing from Ledbury, Herefordshire United Kingdom on Monday, May 18, 2009
I really enjoyed reading this (!). It wasn't the most fast-paced book ever written, but the story moved along nicely and the ending was good - although I can see it is so wide open for the two sequels, which I will be tracking down to read too.

Thanks for organising this - it will move along again soon.

I'm really excited about reading this one! Thanks for sending it on. I've got one ring ahead of it, but I'm planning on getting to this one by the end of the week.

Journal Entry 12 by arturogrande from Coalville, Leicestershire United Kingdom on Monday, June 22, 2009
I enjoyed this, although I must admit I kept comparing it to the TV series, which I know I shouldn't do. The Dexter of the book is a lot darker, more cynical and less likeable than the Dexter of the TV series.
It was enjoyable slasher fiction, but I don't think I'll make a particular effort to hunt out any other Dexter books.
Thanks for sharing - it's now on its way to bekoh in Australia.

Journal Entry 14 by bekoh from Fern Bay, New South Wales Australia on Wednesday, July 1, 2009
Like the other readers I kept comparing this book to the TV series. There are a few fundamental differences but I think the book is darker & much funnier. An easy read - I finished it in a day.

Journal Entry 17 by NMReader from Herndon, Virginia USA on Friday, September 18, 2009
I thought a quick status report on the book might be appreciated.

I should be able to start this book this weekend. I will be reding concurrently with some other books but will try to get through it quickly and get it on its way.

I had hoped that I would be able to finish the book by now. Work has been very hectic but even so, I should be able to complete in the next day or so.

I am enjoying the book and wondering if I shouldn't try to see the show.

Journal Entry 18 by NMReader from Herndon, Virginia USA on Friday, September 25, 2009
Well I enjoyed the book a lot and think that I might make an attempt to see the show some time.

Dexter was an interesting character and his relationship with his sister was unique. I caught on to the surprise at the end earlier although expected something slightly different (can't share as would be spoiler).

While not great literature it was interesting bubble gum for the brain.

Thank you for sharing and I apologize for taking so long with the book.

Finished this book. I thought it was a fun and quirky read. Very different from a "normal" serial killer book. I'm looking forward to the next on in the series. I mailed this off to Sarkiegirl this afternoon, 10/13/09.

I don't usually read these kinds of books, but I did like it a lot. Probably because I watch the TV show already, so that's why i was so interested in it. I'm even listening to the second book on tape.
I'm holding onto the book until I know what to do with it. Let me know if anyone else wants it. :)
Thanks for letting me join the ray!

Journal Entry 27 by megtall from Burton, Michigan USA on Monday, December 28, 2009
While this book isn't the greatest literature on earth, it was an entertaining read for me. I don't often read mystery;/slasher fiction, and was quite surprised to read it all in one afternoon. I found Dexter to be a witty, cynical character that had a very interesting background and an interesting relationship to women. I didn't catch on to the ending twist at first. I had suspected something different to happen. However, the book has made me want to add the TV series to my netflix queue.

Picked up at the post box today; quite lucky that it got here in one piece--in both this and another book I received the packing had been ripped open; thankfully my address was still on there and the post office here actually repacked it in plastic to cover it. That might be normal other places, but here it's pretty unusual!

Looks like a fun read; I'll try to get to it soon--another bookring was waiting with it in the postbox. What do they do, meet up in transit and conspire to arrive together?

Journal Entry 39 by lils74 at Kathmandu, Bagmati (incl. Kathmandu Valley) Nepal on Thursday, June 3, 2010
Finished this one last night. I was quite fascinated in the beginning, but in the end I'd have to say not my favourite type of book. I found some of Dexter's thought's distinctly creepy--I know that was the point, but still. Also, the end was not really a surprise, as I figured it had to be that, and I always feel cheated when I've guessed a thriller before the end. Still, I'm glad to have read it, though I may not seek out more in the series.
I'm pming Sfogs for the next address. Thanks for letting me be part of this ray!
