From the Jacket

Winner of the 2007 BookBrowse Ruby Award.

It’s just a small story really, about among other things: a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. . . .

Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak’s groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist – books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement before he is marched to Dachau. This is an unforgettable story about the ability of books to feed the soul.

This book intrigued me right from the beginning. It's an unusual style of writing and had me hooked all the way through. It felt like a was reading a very long fairy tale.

this was one of two books we read a couple of months ago for our local pageturners reading group

it has been visiting several non bookcrossers since that meeting

i'm not sure this will be one of my favourite reads, the writing style was different,
i did like the names of the books they found along the way

Thank you so much LadyIndigo for this book, I have had it down on my "must read" list for quite a while, which seems to be growing ever higher and longer. I will be starting this once I get a few bookring books out of the way!

Wow, this was a really powerful book for me. I took this away with me on holidays thinking I would get some time to read it, but alas I didn't, so my eventual reading of this book took about 3 weeks instead of my usual 2 or 3 days. I love the writing style and death's perspective. I can only imagine how difficult things must have been in that time in Germany; the author describes everything so beautifully. Thank you LadyIndigo for this book. I will pass this on to a wishlist person or via the OZ VBB , not sure yet.

Well, I had this book listed for the OZ VBB, until my dad found it and started reading it! Of course, that meant that *someone* was bound to select it, and lo-and-behold it was KLL! My dad is still struggling through it, so I've bought another copy so that this one can head on its bookcrossing journey...

Received yesterday in the post. Thanks to briz-cowgirl for sending it along!

Initially I found the writing style of 'The Book Thief' distracting and a bit contrived and I did wonder if I would persist with reading it. However, the writing is very readable - very short chapters and finally I decided the 'factoids' inserted in the story really did help develop character and plot and weren't just a fad. And, ultimately, Liesel's story is very affecting - I've read WW2 stories before, though I don't remember finding them as emotionally affecting as this one.

All in all, then, a good read :-)

This book has been requested by jennymidget in the VBBOz, so I'll pack it up now and post it in the next few days :-)

Sweet, thanks so much KLL!

I agree with KLL's review - a deep and meaningful thoughtful story, but stylistically it managed to buoy itself up and not crush the reader with the weight of its sorrow. I liked that Zusak "spoils" several important events in the story early (usually I hate when writers do that) because I think that's one of the only things that kept me from devolving to a blubbering mess! The whole book - story and style - serves to remind that while it's adults that make war, it's children too that have to live with and suffer by it. Very well done, and deserving of all its critical acclaim.

Off to a BookMooch member elsewhere in the state...

I have just heard from the other BookMooch member I sent this to that it arrived very badly damaged from the recent Brisbane floods, and had to be discarded as it was unusable :(
