One of my favorite features of BookCrossing is the opportunity to track books where ever they may go. We just moved from Waldorf, MD to Bolling Air Force Base in Washington D.C. and it is time to update each book's location and make sure that we have located each book after the move.

I am trying to set the status of all my books to be correct at this time.

Permanent Collection (PC) means that I plan to keep this book for the foreseeable future.

Available (AVL) means that I have read the book or don't desire to read the book and it is ready to move on in some fashion.

To Be Read (TBR) means that I plan to read it (at least someday) and after I read it I will decide what to do with it.

I reserve the right to change my mind at any time!

From the back cover (of at least one copy of the book):

Until that September of 1852, Luke Chandler had never kept a secret or told a single lie. But in the long, hot summer of his seventh year, two groups of migrant workers - and two very dangerous men - came through the Arkansas Delta to work the Chandler cotton farm. And suddenly mysteries are flooding Luke's world. A brutal murder leaves the town seething in gossip and suspicion. A beautiful young woman ignites forbidden passions. A fatherless baby is born ... and someone has begun furtively painting the bare clapboards of the Chandler farmhouse, slowly, painstakingly, bathing the run-down structure in gleaming white. And as young Luke watches the world around him, he unravels secrets that could shatter lives - and change his family and his town forever ....

Well, I must start by saying that I much prefer the legal thrillers to this heart wrenching tale. I am not saying that I didn't like it but it is not a book that I will be re-reading or picking up again.

This book was chilling and creepy in places as bad things start to happen in a little town. Hardened men do terrible things to one another and give the element of danger around every turn. It was hard to imagine being such a little boy with so many secrets and to have seen so many terrible things at such a tender age is horrifying.

The good things about this book is that it gives an insight to the kind of life that country folk had in the 1950's in cotton country. I don't think it is of great historical importance but it does give the reader a little understanding of the way things might have been.

I hope that the next reader enjoys this book.

This book was read for the 2009 Pages Read Challenge from the release challenge forum.

My goal is 35,000 pages and this book has a total of 427* pages that I am counting for this challenge. I have a total of 89 books read this year with 21417 pages read for the year and that is 61.191% of my 2009 goal.

*I had two different versions of this book with differing page counts. Since I could have chosen to read either format I have averaged the two page counts together to get this number for the challenge.
