FROM THE BACK COVER: Tiffany Aching put one foot wrong, made just one little mistake.....And now the spirit of winter is in love with her. He gives her roses and icebergs and showers her with snowflakes, which is tough when your thirteen, but also just a bit....cool. If Tiffany doesn't work out how to deal with him, there will never be another springtime....

Journal Entry 4 by KLL from Perth, Western Australia Australia on Saturday, August 16, 2008
Finally read this last week! This is very much a Pratchett book and an enjoyable one too. I've always felt (thought never proved) that Pratchett became a little more... abstract?? in his later Discworld books, and this seemed to be the case with this book (though perhaps it's more related to books which have significant magic in them??). Anyway, Tiffany is a sensible girl and I always like it when Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg appear. I've read a lot of Discworld now, and I'm not sure if there's anything *particular* about this installment to distinguish it from the rest, but it was good fun anyway :-) This is now reserved for tqd as part of the VBBoz. I have another book to send her as well, which I'm just finishing, but hopefully I'll have them both in the post soon :-)

Journal Entry 5 by tqd from Sydney, New South Wales Australia on Sunday, September 07, 2008
Thanks KLL! I've read (far too) many Pratchett books in the past, and found the "middle" period a bit lacking in vitality. So gave up on his books as a whole. But friends of mine who are still reading all his books religiously reckon they've gotten better again, and the ones I've read of his "later" period have been exceptional good satirical fantasy, better than his earlier ones. I'm not quite sure where this one falls in the Pratchettian oeuvre, but I'm hoping it's towards the latter. And, if it isn't, it'll be a nice change between reading "1001" books anyhow. ;)

Journal Entry 6 by tqd from Sydney, New South Wales Australia on Saturday, November 29, 2008
I got to read this one while up in tropical FNQ, sipping drinks by the pool (since we couldn't swim in the ocean, thanks to the deadly box jellyfish). I wish it had cooled me down to read about the Wintersmith in such climes (I did require a lot of cooling down!), but unfortunately the drinks and the pool had to do that for me. It's a tough life, sometimes. I was a bit muddled for the first part of this book (apparently there are books that come before this, and the previous reading was rather essential to make sense of things; plus it did jump around in time a bit too much), but then the witches appeared and all was forgiven. Many hurrahs for Nanny Ogg and Granny Weatherwax! I did particularly like Tiffany's confusion between her two beaus: one is over the top flattering (the snowflakes shaped like Tiffany!), but is inhuman and will kill everything on the planet if she goes to him; the other is a bit unable to say what he feels about her, but she goes nutso when he looks at another girl's watercolours. As someone rapidly approaching the "wrong side" of 40, the choice between beaus is obvious. It's to Pratchett's credit that it reminded me enough of being 13 to understand that this would once have been a difficult choice for me too. I did enjoy this book, and knocked it off in one day. (And then got back to Sydney, and had to spend almost a week before I found time to write a review!) Thanks very much, KLL, for passing it along. I might pop this back in the Oz VBB this round... UPDATE 10 Dec 2008: And offered up to the Oz VBB! UPDATE 12 Dec 2008: And chosen by dolphin-au! It shall be in the mail asap.

Thanks tqd!. Wintersmith arrived safely in a sweltering day. I've still got 'A hatful of sky' on Mt TBR so will read that before this one.

I actually must have read this book more than a year ago. I enjoyed it as I have enjoyed most of Pratchett's books. I like this little series, as the witches are my favourite characters of the disc world. It's just as clever as his other books, but very enjoyable for kids as well.
