Hello! And welcome to BookCrossing.com, thanks for checking in. Please feel free to read the book (or not read the book) it's yours to enjoy.

Please, please, please make a journal entry so the original owner and future readers can track this book's journey. Happy reading and Happy Crossing!

This book was very enjoyable, but perhaps a little too slow to get there and too fast to finish. I do wonder if my expectation was distorted by my repeated exposure to the movie trailer which perhaps caused my anticipation to be heightened.

I particularly liked how the author sometimes dived into a scene without identifying the character he was writing about and it made the reader work it out. This was especially noted and enjoyed at the begining of the final part of the book when I was desparate to find out who was still around in their 80's. (don't panic, it's not really a spoiler)

It was a great read and I now can't wait to see the movie.

Cheers Blundery - I've not seen the film yet either! (And fortunately have been spared too many views of the trailer so far...) Actually my little sister read this for English Lit, and recommended it. Thanks for popping it in the VBB for me to pinch!

Lent this one to my father-in-law for a while, and he said it was "all right" which is not as bad as it sounds coming from him...

Anyways, I've read it now, and tried to read it just as a story, rather than a great work of modern literature (I know my sister studied this in English Lit at uni). And I was not so sure... Blundery says "too slow to get there and too fast to finish", and I agree completely, it was almost a whimsical sort of dragging in the first half, all a bit fuzzy (so much so I had to go back and reread a few key parts!) And then the second half flashed by at breakneck pace (again I had to go back and reread, just to make sure I hadn't skipped bits!) The ending was a bit bland too...

Ah well, never mind. Not a dreadful waste of time, I'm glad I did read it or I'd be forever wondering. I've promised my FIL I'd read his copy of "On Chesil Beach" and tell him what I think of that, so that's next on the Ian McEwan reading list!

And now FINALLY off it goes to SimplyCee!

Got this around the end of April, I think, and I forgot to journal it. Sorry!
