The Kite Runner (Alex Awards (Awards))

Everyone has raved about this book but my feelings about it are mostly lukewarm. There's something kind of "novel-written-by-the-numbers" about it, a universal story told in a mostly pedestrian way, although set in an environment and culture that certainly is original. The prevailing sense of doom, of fate, of amends-making is so prevalent throughout the book, that it's too easy to guess at what's coming next. Which in many cases feels weirdly manipulative. I did find myself finally fully engaged for the last third of the story and found the ending sweet, sad, and hopeful.
