A true SF classic, although you could argue it doesn't really fit into this category any more. The science is outdated and proved wrong, but the theories are sound and you find yourself believing it all anyway. If you have only ever seen the film, then this is totally different.

It reads like a travel journal, written by Axel as he travels with his Uncle and guide, Hans, along the footsteps of a famous explorer. They climb an extinct volcano and descend into the centre of the earth, finding prehistoric creatures still thriving and the evidence that a descendent of man may still be living beneath the surface.

A quick read, but with plenty of adventure to keep you turning the pages, although sometimes I felt Axel needed a slap and told to stop whining!! Hope you enjoy it too.

My bookrings and rays have all dried up (for the time being at least) and I've finally started reading this, thanks dark-draco for sending it to me!

Considering the new film starring Brendan Fraser is out in the cinema at the moment this might appear to be good timing but it is just a coincidence and I only realised that a remake of the film had been made when I saw posters on the buses in Manchester city centre. I do remember watching the 1960 version of the movie as a kid and being quite frightened. Anyway enough about the films of the novel, I'm looking forward to reading and imagining what Jules Verne intended. (Plus it has the added advantage of being listed in Peter Boxall's "1001 Books: You Must Read Before You Die" bringing my total up to a whopping 53 or 5.29%)

EDIT [22nd July 2008]: Having just completed this novel I must say for a novel first published in 1864 this is full of imagination, Jules Verne bring the underworld to life and the journey of Axel, Hans and Professor Lindenbrock is exciting. An enjoyable read!

Stubee has passed this on to me. I'm just near the end of my current read (another sci-fi book coincidentally) so I will be getting onto this shortly.

To say I'm not a big sci-fi fan I actually quite enjoyed this but I think that's because this seemed more of an adventure or fantasy book than anything else! I found the story flowed really quickly and was exciting because each chapter brought something new, Verne's imagination seems to have no bounds!! Admittedly I did want to shake Axel at various point to stop him whingeing but I thought the character of the Professor was well written with his eccentricities.

All in all a very interesting and enjoyable read. I'd definitely like to read more of Verne's books after reading this.

Stubee has Supertalya's address so we will be posting this on this week.

Edit 28/7/08 - this was posted today!

Definitely a fun read! Although, I know the whole Ocean under the earth's crust has been disproved, I still found the novel a little bit of a science lesson. Especially the discussion of the different layers of earth and what fossils you would expect to find there. I thought this would be a good read for children interested in science.

I really enjoyed the passages set in Iceland. I'm looking forward to one day visiting this interesting country. Maybe even go to Sneffels to climb the volcano (prolly not.) I was also tickled by the mention of Vor Frelsers Kirke in Copenhagen. The church with the staircase which winds its way around the spire. I've actually climbed this, so I found the mention pretty exciting.

I'm enjoying reading these children's classics that I missed when I was growing up. Thank you 1001 books for providing me with this oppportunity.

I have offered this as an RABCK to the 1001 list. If I have no takers I'll probably offer it on Bookmooch.
