This was the perfect time to give it to me, though. Now I had time to start it on Boxing Day, and to get through most of the rest of it on the plane home. She knows about my bookcrossing hobby, and so I think she'd be happy for me to pass both copies along to other readers now that I have finished. I liked the background plot very much, and agree with the Observer reviewer (quoted in a blurb) that the book was well researched. However, in many places I was frustrated that the author didn't seem to SHOW so much as to TELL. I tried to explain this to Mr P and he immediately asked, "Is it a first novel?" and I see that yes, it is. I hope this author will go on to even better things! I do have one other gripe, and that was the conclusion of the novel. Too much, I thought, got wrapped up in a mere nine pages! But ignoring the "envelope" of Alexis's (and Sofia's) story/ies, I found the inner story, of Eleni and Maria, of Spinalonga and Crete more widely, enjoyable and truly interesting. |
