Good story although not exactly what I expected. Disturbing what happened to the daughter and how her family subsequently treated her. Well written though and I would recommend this book to others. Thanks again for sending it to me!

Journal Entry 8 by Sherria from Stamford, Connecticut USA on Saturday, May 07, 2005
This was a beautifully written book. Oates has a wonderful way with words; this is the first book of hers that I've read but I'm sure it won't be the last. Her characters were well fleshed out and complex, and the plot moved well. The only part of this book that I didn't like was the ending; it seemed to wrap up too neatly and I felt like there was something missing. There was no apparent explanation of why Marianne changed, overcame her difficulties, and managed to achieve a happy life. It was wonderful that she did, but I would have liked to know HOW she managed to overcome the history that haunted her throughout the book. With the rest of the characters, those moments were clear and understandable, but not so with Marianne. I have the address for the next participant. Unfortunately, I have to go out of town early Monday morning, so I won't be able to drop it in the mail until I return at the end of the week. *edited to add that this book FINALLY found it's way to the post office on Monday 5/16. Sorry for the delay*

Journal Entry 10 by syrin from Lisboa - City, Lisboa (cidade) Portugal on Thursday, September 01, 2005

First of all, I want to apologize for keeping the book for so long. I didn't expect this to happen, but I had a little bit of a problem finishing the book. At first the descriptive content wasn't a problem, the story was being set up, we needed to know the characters. But after a while the endless descriptions started drawing me away from the story. And what a shame... I think they didn't let me get to know the characters very well. The story is fairly idyllic: a happy family, a loving couple, four amazing kids. And then everything changes. What I couldn’t understand was why the family felt the need to send Marianne away. She was the victim, but was treated almost as the sole culprit of what happened. I can't condone this, and it's no wonder they family broke apart as it was. Hopefully things have changed enough in the last couple of decades so that this doesn't happen again. Again, thanks for the book and the patience, kab133. The book is already on its way to Virgulina, and hopefully it'll be there by tomorrow.

I did enjoy this book eventually. It took me a while to get used to the style of writing. Sometimes I wasn't sure if Judd was writing or it was just narrative if that makes sense. Anyway thank you for sharing. Shall PM geishabird for her address. Sent to geishabird 31st Oct

Journal Entry 14 by geishabird from Toronto, Ontario Canada on Wednesday, December 07, 2005
I finished this book a couple of days ago but have had to let it simmer for a few days before I was able to post my comments about it, as it's not an easy book to discuss. Overall, I think this is a very good book (my first by Joyce Carol Oates, an author who's been on my radar for a while now), but my response to it was complicated. I think she's an excellent writer and manages to tackle some big and difficult - not to mention uncomfortable - subjects very well. I agree with Sherria that the ending seemed somewhat idealized - but then began to wonder if this was the whole point? How real were the Mulvaneys to begin with; how real were they by story's end? How much is illusion, how much is real - for any of us? (Now I'm starting to sound like Patrick, aren't I?) The downfall of the Mulvaneys is a very believable and plausible tale which certainly exposes the uglier sides of human nature - both internal and external. I found Marianne and Patrick to be particularly intriguing characters, although I felt Patrick's hiatus from the story seemed a bit abrupt and surprising. But such is life, isn't it? Nothing ever goes the way you plan it. I came across a phrase just the other day in another book: "The Law Of Unintentional Effect." I think this applies very well to this book as well. Thanks very much for sharing this, kab113. agschoolgrad and cowgirl-up have both requested to be skipped but I now have snowy652's address and the book will be going out this week.

Journal Entry 16 by snowy652 from Abbotsford, British Columbia Canada on Saturday, December 31, 2005
book arrived and has been put on my tbr first pile. I have a few to read before it but will get to it as soon as I can. I will comment on the book once read and then send it back to kab113. FYI ~ The books pages look like they are beginning to fall out -- I will be extra careful while reading this one. Jan 27 ~ I have now started reading this book. Feb 01 ~ I have tried and tried to get into this book and I just can't. I find the writing to be hard to follow and the story has not grabbed me at all -- it just bored me. Thank you for the opportunity to try a new author -- I appreciate it. I will be sending this one home once I get an address.
