Loved the writing. Thoroughly enjoyed the unique way McEwan has for exploring and defining each character's psyche. Also appreciated the way different characters' perspectives of the same event is so deftly handled. I didn't find the plot exactly riveting, however. I have little desire to see the film; it would be impossible to portray the inner turmoils/mental revelations/emotional journeys, the very thing that to me is the heart and soul of the novel.

Thank you so much for sending this book from my wish list. I haven't seen the film. I don't know if I will, but I definitely want to read the book.

Journal Entry 5 by guinaveve from Mason, Ohio USA on Sunday, February 17, 2008

I read this and thought it sounded as though it were written a hundred years ago. The tone and the wording brought this to mind. It was a great story and very descriptive. I wasn't as interested as the part of the story covering the war as I was in the rest, but it was overall a great read. There was a local radio station who selected a young lady they were trying to match with a date for Valentine's Day. There were 7-8 guys to choose from for her and people could vote via the internet for one of those guys. My brother was one of the guys being voted on. On BookCrossing's Wish List Forum, I posted about this contest. Anyone who voted for my brother would be entered into a drawing for a free book, if my brother won. He won and I have drawn BCer pzarks. She chose this book to have sent to her. So within the week, this book should be in the mail on the way to pzarks.

I enjoyed this book. I liked seeing the same events through the different characters' perspectives, but I had already figured out what really happened, so the ending was no surprise. I don't think that I'll see the movie, since it probably won't translate well onto the silver screen. Thanks again to guinaveve for sending this!
