Journal Entry 1 by Findabair from St. Hanshaugen bydel, Oslo fylke Norway on Wednesday, December 26, 2007
I remember hardly anything at all about this book other than that I thought it was boring. So I'm not going to bother to read it again! Fortunately I have a friend I think might be interested in it... =)

The blurb:

"In this engagingly written sequel to Sense and Sensibility, Emma Tennant continues the lives of the Dashwood sisters - now Mrs Christopher Brandon and Mrs Edward Ferrars. Elinor and Marianne are eagerly anticipating the pleasures of living near one another - for Colonel Brandon has granted the living of the parish of Delaford to Elinor's husband, Edward. The sisters - one so calm, composed and dependable, the other so full of impossible hopes and aspirations - will be together at last.

But life is not as simple as it seems. Passion, in the shape of the charming seducer Willoughby, makes an appearance... as do Jane Austen's perennial themes of money and social embarassment."

Got this from Findabair at meetup on Sunday, January 6th. Yay, a Jane Austen sequel ... ! Probably not too good but I still want to read it. I have a project. ;-) Thanks, Findabair!

I've read this book now, August 27th through 30th. I am not impressed. This is seriously not a good book. It's not very well written ... although not very badly written either. I'd call it an indifferent writing style. In other words, it falls far short of the original which it attempts to follow up on, because Austen as we know was an absolutely superb writer. But it's not badly written, I wouldn't say that at all.

My main beef with the book is the plot which I find to be far-fetched, generally not very credible and on some points pretty ridiculous. Sometimes it almost seemed as if not even Tennant was taking the story quite seriously. Not a good sign. The book is written in the form of a series of letters, a rather original form (the first Austen sequel I've read that's been done this way) which I suppose works well enough. But the story just isn't believable enough. I would never for a second think that Jane Austen could have written this. So that has to mean that Tennant has failed in some way, IMO.

Still though it was an OK read if you aren't looking for anything more than some entertainment to pass the time. It was a quick and easy read.

I would recommend this book only to fans.

Thanks for sharing, Findabair! Now I hope this book will be travelling pretty soon. :-)

Got this from LeishaCamden at our monthly meetup yesterday. I am looking forward to reading it, although it doesn't come very recommended. :-)

Finished this book today. I agree with Leisha, this is just an average read. I didn't like some of the turns of the story, I found them a bit over the top. But still, it was an OK read, as I am a true Austen-fan.

I found this at la Baguette yesterday. When i read the journal entries it seems that the other readers did not think very highly of it, but as a Jane Austen fan I feel that I ought to read it, even if it is not "the real thing".

I agree that this was not a very good book, but still, as an Austen fan, I found it entertaining. The least convincing part of it was the end of the book, where suddenly everything falls into its right place a bit to quick and easy. I liked the form, which is all letters, written by different characters. Especially those of the wife of the late vicar..

I left this book with LeishaCamden, maybe she knows more Austen fans, who are interested in reading stories by "wannabe" Austens.

Now I see that the one person wishing for this is Rochester74 who left me a lovely little gift on the RABCK table today. I'm very happy to be able to give her this little surprise in return, although I'm not sure how much she'll enjoy it ... ;-)

Happy reading, Rochester74!!

Thank you very much for this wishlistbook. I got it at the International Bookcrossing Convention in Oslo.
I am very found of AustenSpinOffs and have read quite a lot so far. I have read two book of this author I thought that they were really bad. But since I enjoy even the bad spinoffs I will have fun reading it :-)
Thank you very much LeishaCamden.

The story was not like any version I expected, but it was not worse than I expected. After the first shocking moments, I thought it was so absurd, that it was rather funny. I nearly expected that Edward would end up with Lucy again, Marianne would end up with Willoughby and Elenor and Colonel Brandon would fall in love. Maybe that would have been a more fitting end to this story.
The characters in this version do not act and talk in a way they would. And there is no "living happily ever after" for anybody in this book.

I offered this book in the forum and it will be travelling as a RABCK to Finland.
