To tell the truth, I've had this book for a few years, purchased from Goodwill especially to share through BookCrossing, but I've always read other TBRs or rings/rays first. Now I'm registering it so that it will count for my "Reduce my TBR Mountain Challenge" in 2008. Otherwise, I may never allow myself to actually READ it!

July 31, 2009: 2008 Didn't happen. MAYBE 2009, but to be honest, that doesn't look promising, either!

From the author's website www.LisaSee.com (Link) ... This absorbing novel – with a storyline unlike anything Lisa See has written before – takes place in 19th century China when girls had their feet bound, then spent the rest of their lives in seclusion with only a single window from which to see. Illiterate and isolated, they were not expected to think, be creative, or have emotions. But in one remote county, women developed their own secret code, nu shu (women's writing) the only gender-based written language to have been found in the world. Some girls were paired as "old-sames" in emotional matches that lasted throughout their lives. They painted letters on fans, embroidered messages on handkerchiefs, and composed stories, thereby reaching out of their windows to share their hopes, dreams, and accomplishments.

What an eye-opener.
I read Shanghai Girls a few months ago & found it OK / mediocre but nothing special.
SO, I postponed reading this book by Lisa See.
What a mistake - are they really both written by the same author I wonder ??!!..
This was an amazing read, totally different in all ways.
It was well constructed, engaging, informative and most of all gripping from beginning to end.
I will now look to read more of Lisa See's novels and can only hope they are more like Snow Flower & the Secret Fan as opposed to Shanghai Girls....
