A lovely little gift arrived in the post this morning - a chapter from a forthcoming book, but it's such a little gem in itself, beautifully bound and with a georgous cover illustration, that I'm not going to be able to part with it once I've read it.
I think it must have come from Cannongate Books.
The chapter is taken from The Gargoyle, which is due to be published in September 2008.

A short but delightful fable of a young women who gives up her life and then dies for the love of a humble farm boy and her father. An exquisite and touching portrayal of man's inhumanity to man and a tautly delivered discourse on the bitter-sweet victory in death of faithfulness and loyalty.
