Whatever I were to say about this one would not do it justice. The characters are strong and memorable, the story tragic and profound, and the world we live in unfortunately makes it evergreen, a warning and an appeal to kindness.

Thank you so much for sharing this book with me, tabby-cat-owner! It is now once again available for 1001-library members. Let's keep an eye on it and see where it travels next :)

I had read this book in french when I was a teenager, and I had very few memories of it actually, only that I had loved it. Having it in english now thanks to lamelemon, I definitely felt like re-reading it hearing on the radio how it seemed to be a hit once again in the USA, as people believe it foresees the crisis resulting from the COVID pandemy. Bad news about a good book, even though I am not sure it is accurate (I hope not indeed), and time to check what it is all about.

I have read three quarters of this very moving book. It makes me think by some aspects of Victor Hugo's "Misérables", at least I think both books have the same purpose with distinct approaches.
Ever wonder why keeping old drawings, useless objects, broken toys ? Ask the families in the book, forced to leave everything behind when pushed out of their land. The answer is p. 88 : "And this picture - an angel. I looked at that [...] Think we could get this china dog in ? Aunt Sadie brought it from the St. Louis Fair [...] These feathers - never got to use them. No, there isn't room.
How can we live without our lives ? How will we know it's us without our past ? No. Leave it. Burn it."

Edit 9/4/2020 :

I found the homework I did about this book back in april 1985 (!) : 10 pages of hand-writing, with, as a conclusion, my favorite quote from the whole story, guess what ? "How can we live without our lives ? How will we know it's us without our past ? "

It is such a great book ! Whereas "our" Victor Hugo's Misérables is a tale of romance and epic, this US "Misérables" is a very successfull documentary : we are really with the Joad family from beginning to end with a deep understanding of their situation, suffering, desires. Steinbeck does not comment, he shows, especially by the way of dialogues. He has this confidence in the strength of what he is telling and in the reader's intelligence. He finally lets the book loose in the last chapter (flood, birth, barn...) of well-known epic and biblical dimension.

The impression left by this reading this summer is definitely lasting. I realized I loved it twice, first in french, then in english, in a 35 years interval of time, but each time for different reasons. As a teen-ager I read it as a protest tale, claiming for justice, equity. Later I was seized by its accuracy and the sharp proximity and empathy with the characters. It is almost painful sometimes, and the final chapter has been overwhelming both times. Truly a masterpiece.
