What you have in your hands is an honest-to-goodness gift, no strings attached. You may keep it forever and ever, pass it on to a friend, or release it in the wild like I did. I know it may seem a little odd to find this lying around--it's my way of touching the lives of others in a positive way, with the hope that it made your day. :)

The Handmaid's Tale
margaret Atwood has proven her mastery at conveying the fears and uncertainties that lurk within us all...by forcing us to look at them for what they are.
Now, in a book that is at once mordant satire and dire warning, she has created an Orwellian 1984 as seen by women in the near future. Life in what was once the United States has become a sexually repressed existance in the Republic of Gilead, an intolerant theocracy founded by religious extremists. In a land where today's rhetoric has become tomorrow's reality, a still-young woman hauntingly recalls her old life in the 1980's, and with cool-eyed, often desperate detachment, she describes her new identity as a Handmaid, enlisted to bear children for the elite.

I'm returning to the 1001 Library unread. I found it when packing up my flat to get married and my husband has a copy, so I'm belatedly passing it on its way.

Safely received with thanks a few weeks ago, sorry for the very late registration. Happy New 2017 to everyone, and good luck with tackling the list this year :)
I knew what I was getting into, having already watched the first two seasons of the series, but even so the book felt fresh and still kept its element of surprise. I kept an eye (pun not intended) on the changes and they all seem justified - the series brought the universe some 30-40 years ahead, keeping it in tune with contemporary technology and issues, but the book doesn't feel old nor stiffy at all. This nearby future is scary and believable. The very little information, the Stanford Prison cruelty of the Aunts, the public executions and the demolition of human spirit for the greater good all hit home.
Thank you so much for sharing, the book is once more available for 1001-library members. Let's see where it will end up next!
