From the back cover:
"Jose Luandino Viera's Luuanda first appeared in print in 1964 while he was in prison on charges of political activities against the Portuguese colonial regime in Angola. As an activist for the MOLAm Vueura was arrested ub 1961 and remained incarcerated until 1972 when he was released from the Tarrafal prison, on the Cape Verde Islands, under a conditional parole and sent to Lisbon. It was only after April 1974, when a military coup toppled the repressive Portuguese dictatorship, that most of Vieira's work began to appear in print. By January 1975, when he finally returned to a soon to be independent Angola, at least four collections of his short stories (including Luuanda which had been banned for nearly a decade) had been published."

"In this collection, Vieira employs the mixture of Portuguese and Kimbundu which characterizes the speech of most Angolans in the capital's poorer neighbourhoods. He brings to life the daily joys and sorrows, victories and defeats of the people who lived in and endured Luanda's slums during colonial times."
