Selected for Olympic Challenge - Sao Tome and Principe.
I was afraid of this book when I read it's description because I thought it would be textbook dry sucking the life out of the poems. I ended up enjoying both snippets and the history behind the snippets. I don't know if it is because the history was new or the poems were new to me.
There is also a well rounded selection of poems at the end that are presented in its orginal language and english.
A part of me wanted to keep this book a little longer and show a few people what I found, but I think hobbit will like this more.

This looks very interesting. I admit to having the same thoughts about it maybe being dry when I read the title - "essays on literature" doesn't sound very exciting. But the poems definitely look promising, as does the fact that it explores a theme of a mythic bird.

Thanks, hendertuckian!

I really enjoyed this book, especially the appendix full of poems!

I'm sending along with some other books from various countries to soffitta1 who's also working on the Olympic Challenge. Don't worry, it's really a lot better than the title makes it sound - enjoy!!

Just for interest, its current travelling companions are:
Homo Novus
Global Restructuring and Peripheral States: The Carrot and the Stick in Mauritania
Kisses in the Nederends
The Return of the Water Spirit

Excellent, this will work for 2 challenges - the Olympic and my 999 Librarything challenge. Thanks!

I was worried this would be a bit dry, but actually this was a good read. I am living in Portugal and taking a Portuguese course at uni, so am trying to read as much on Luso-culture as possible.
It takes a look at the literature of the islands, but also gives you the political and historical background. I also enjoyed the poems in the appendix.
