Selected for Olympic Challenge - Gabon goes to hobbit after I'm done
Ok this book strays a little bit but it is still an amazing story.

I had to look up Gabon to see where it is and I looked up Martinique also, where Rene Maran was born. Since it has such a good recomendation from you, I'll particularly look forward to reading this.

One of the more interesting books I've read for this challenge. Thanks, hendertuckian, for sharing it with me. It was short and yet poignant and descriptive of the culture.

Born in Martinique, schooled in France, Maran (1887-1960)entered the French colonial service, and worked in French Equatorial Africa (later the Central African Republic) from 1910 to 1925, the only black Frenchman to do so. Batouala is drawn from this experience and won the Prix Goncourt in 1921. In the preface, Maran's anti-colonial stance is more explicit.

A deceptively 'easy' book to read - many disturbing themes.

Some of this is a bit hard-going but nonetheless it's an enjoyable story that comes to an inevitable conclusion.
