I've finished this. It was slow going, as I had to take breaks from it. I was glad he didn't go into more graphic details of the fighting.

I felt sorry for this boy who was forced into the position of a man while still quite immature. Yet I also felt that he did not step up and behave in an honorable way, but joined in killings for a cause he didn't believe.

He seemed to have basically abandoned his family - he went back to see them occasionally but only when he needed something - he didn't seem to help them much. I can only imagine that the resulting society in Chad is almost completely fragmented, with much of the family and village structure lost.

I'll be packaging this up to send to bartonz, as she chose it in the Passport to the World VBB.
