I had to force myself to finish this book. I only finally got into the book during the last eighty pages. The story, in my opinion, is not a love story but a story of a man that is a stalker. Although the main character, Florentino Ariza, claims his love for Fermina Daza, he sleeps with over 600 women including a girl of 14 during his life. I thought he seemed desparate and the story was unrealistic.
However based on the many positive reviews of this book out there, I am sure some will disagree. I hope that the readers in the ring enjoy this book more than I did.

Got it in the mail yesterday here in Baltimore, Maryland...thanks, liz-z! My bookring TBR pile is looking big but no fear...with luck it'll be onto the next reader within a month...I hope!
A whirlwind of a book. It's definitely something to be read and digested fully - I probably lost a lot of it because I put it down a bunch of times. I wish I had more time to analyze this extremely well-written story, but I felt that I had the book too long and rushed myself through the last 100 pages last night before bed. The ending was amazing though. I think I'll read this again in the future when my mind is clearer. Although it's not a favorite of mine at the moment, I can see how others would really love it. I assure you it was not wasted on me. :)
This book has traveled to Maryland, Puerto Rico, and Massachusetts...and that's ALL from me! I have hopi100's address and will send it to her sometime next week. I will include a "postcard diary"...while in PR, I visited Isabel-Batteria, who currently has a postcard-diary I started last year that has 9 entries from 3 or 4 continents! Thanks again liz-z.

With Postcard Diary #1 (keep it going) it's off from me in Amherst, MA to hopi100 in Alexandria, VA! Go book go!
This arrived in the mail today -- I can't wait to start on it!
I'm so sorry for the delay -- I've been sick for the last two weeks (sinus-related, so don't worry, I won't be mailing germs with the book! ;)). At any rate this book should be moving again shortly. Thanks! :)
This has been a very enjoyable book -- thank you so much for affording me the extra time to absorb it all!
I'll have this off to Dabercro this week! Thanks again!

Arrived in the mail today. It is at the top of my TBR pile and I hope to start this book at the end of the week. I enjoyed the postcard diary and will add mine when I get ready to send the book on.
This isn't a book that can be read quickly. The author is very descriptive and wordy. I agree with liz-z, this is not a love story but a story of a very sick man, Florentino Ariza. I was especially disturbed by his relationship with America Vicuna.
I will be sending this on to guinaveve in OH.

This came today. I look forward to reading it.
This book was not one of those that totally captivated me, the kind that you just don't want to put down. I was interested in it while I was reading it, but when I stopped, I found myself not wanting to pick it up again. The writing was good, but I found the premise silly. Florentino Ariza's supposed love for Fermina Daza was so contrived. He barely knew her. I think it was supposed to be romantic that he lived his life for her and waited for her all that time, but since the "love" was based on nothing real, it seemed more nutty than romantic. It reminded me of this guy I "dated" in 5th grade which is around age 10. We didn't really date, just did what most kids did at that age which is write little letters but never really speak to each other. I moved away 3 years after we "broke up" and then moved back as an adult. We ran into each other and went out to get something to eat. At the end of the evening, he confessed his love for me and his hope that we could get back together like we used to be. What we used to be was nothing really, so I thought it was so weird, I couldn't bring myself to go out with him again. I felt like Florentino's Ariza's love for Fermina Daza was like that, based on nothing. The only reason I could see Florentino Ariza holding onto that love was because he wanted to and he liked the idea of it, not because of any real feelings he had.
All of the other women he slept with while waiting for Fermina Daza didn't bother me, but the affair with the 14 year old girl did and it was told in such a disgusting manner frequently comparing her to an infant which made it even more disturbing. That really ruined the book for me.
I was disappointed with the ending which didn't feel like an ending to me just something tacked on because the author didn't know what to do with the characters at that point.
I know this review sound terrible, but I wouldn't say that I hated this book. I just kept wishing the plot would take a different direction though I liked how the author wrote.

i got this in the mail today. I have about 2/3s of a book ahead of it but will get to it very soon!!!
thanks, so much!!!
thanks, so much!!!
This book was a little hard for me to get into and felt laborious to finish. However, the plot was intriguing and the characters were relatable on some higher, more romantical, fantastic plane.
Throughout the entire piece, i was wanted ends to be tied and for the main characters to have some peace. i wish the ending would have done that. :(
PMed the next reader for shipping info and will be mailing out ASAP.
