Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe: A Novel (Bookray)
18 journalers for this copy...
From Publishers Weekly:
When Cleo Threadgood and Evelyn Couch meet in the visitors lounge of an Alabama nursing home, they find themselves exchanging the sort of confidences that are sometimes only safe to reveal to strangers. At 48, Evelyn is falling apart: none of the middle-class values she grew up with seem to signify in today's world. On the other hand, 86-year-old Cleo is still being nurtured by memories of a lifetime spent in Whistle Stop, a pocket-sized town outside of Birmingham, which flourished in the days of the Great Depression. Most of the town's life centered around its one cafe, whose owners, gentle Ruth and tomboyish Idgie, served up grits (both true and hominy) to anyone who passed by. How their love for each other and just about everyone else survived visits from the sheriff, the Ku Klux Klan, a host of hungry hoboes, a murder and the rigors of the Depression makes lively readingthe kind that eventually nourishes Evelyn and the reader as well. Though Flagg's characters tend to be sweet as candied yams or mean clear through, she manages to infuse their story with enough tartness to avoid sentimentality. Admirers of the wise child in Flagg's first novel, Coming Attractions, will find her grown-up successor, Idgie, equally appealing. The book's best character, perhaps, is the town of Whistle Stop itself. Too bad the trains don't stop there anymore.

I read this book years ago. It's a great story! I have re-read it a few times. This is a copy I bought at the library.
I am going to offer as a bookray and see if anyone else is interested in reading it.

Happy Travels, Little Book!
Happy Travels, Little Book!
I arrived home from my holiday down the coast to find this lovely gem in my PO Box waiting for me to read... what a wonderful surprise to have a bookray arrive while I've been off trying to keep dry with all this wet weather here on the eastern Seaboard of Australia.
I sent this book off to Sherlockfan in New Zealand - the second person on the list. I read this rather heavy book in a little under a week and found myself going through 60 - 80 pages a day; which is unusual with the speed I read. So, happy travels with this book. It was a wonderful read... I had a more than a few giggles and laugh out loud moments as well as sad ones too.
Journal Entry 7 by Sherlockfan from Upper Hutt, Wellington Province New Zealand on Monday, January 14, 2008
The book arrived safely today and, by coincidence I just finished a book this morning so I can start it tonight with a clear conscience.
It is such a catchy title, and is something I've been wanting to read for a long time.
Thanks JennyC1230 for starting this ring, and Mozette for posting to me. What a sensible idea to have the sheet inside with the rules and the readers list on.
I'll pm mikime this evening.

Thoroughly enjoyed this delightful little book. Just sometimes I had to put brain totally in gear to realise which decade we were in - despite each chapter having a date on - but over all the way of presentation, jumping back and forth, worked really well. There was a good building of short term tension when Evelyn had listened to part of a story from Mrs Threadgoode but left before the vital missing bit of information was told.
Life in completely rural New Zealand in the '30s and 40s could well have been similar to that in WhistleStop but we'd not yet reached anything like the cuisine levels that Idgie and Ruth provided in their cafe.
Our treatment of our indigenous population (Maori) at that time can't be compared with the hideous treatment of AfricanAmerican people but there was, and still is, racial tension, especially in some rural areas. This book portrays well the characters and charms of folk like Sipsey, Onzell, Big George and their kith and kin.
Very strongly developed characters means that I'll remember these folk when I'm idly musing about books I've read this year. This is a book that I'm sure I will want to read again in time to come.

I received this yesterday. Thank you Sherlockfan for sending it to me, and to JennyC1230 for the ring! I'll read it soon and pass it on! :)
Such a nice, lively reading! It grabbed and made me completely forget my time and place....I kind of felt like Evelyn with Mrs.Threadgoode! ;) I did watch the movie, ages ago, but in the novel there are so many different points of views, things are seen from lots of different perspectives... The shifting forward and backward in times and places can be confusing, but the many little stories that are told, the secrets unfolded, the best and the worst revealed of each character are definitely worth it! I loved the way the writer used the "bullettins" to give the reader the taste of live, just-in news about (crucial, or less so) events of that period!
Really good fun! Thanks a lot for letting me read it!
I'll send it on to Bookworm-lady later on today! Happy reading!

This must be one of the best novels I have ever read!
I loved the characters (lots in common with Evelyn, I confess!), I loved the way it skips in time, and I loved Idgie and Ruth's love story...
Thank you so much for sharing... I am still trying to get Ftarazu's address...

It arrived yesterday. I have 3 books in front of it but I'll try to be fast. It seems to be a very good book. Im looking forward to read it!
Im sorry for the delay! At the beginning it was a bit hard to get into the book but then the story really got me going...The only hard thing in the book was to understand in which decade we were. But as I got into the book and secrets started to be revealed, I suddently could understand immediately in which year we were.
I especially liked Evelyn and Mrs.Threadgoode relation and their stories. I also enjoy reading about Idgie adventures and their club. In overall I think they were quite open minded to the time regarding Idgie and Ruth relationship. Of course that doesn’t apply to the way they treated AfricanAmerican people.
It was a very nice book, I really enjoyed it. Thanks JennyC1230 for sharing it. It will be sent to Bjorg tomorrow!

I just finished the book and I must say that I love it:) I´ve been wanting to read this book for years - so thanks JennyC1230:)
I was hooked on the book right away. I was starting to feel just as excited as Evelyn to hear more from Mrs.Threadgoode. I like the way Fannie Flagg writes the book, going back and forth in time like she did work out well. I thought it might be a bit confusing at first but it was not!!
Anyways, have already contacted PinkManager but she asked to be skipped. So I PMed orange-platypus and am now waiting for the address:)

Journal Entry 22 by Apechild from York, North Yorkshire United Kingdom on Sunday, September 21, 2008
I finished reading this last night - got it read in a couple of days and I really enjoyed it. It says something for a book when you would really like to meet the characters and move in to the place for a while!
I liked the fact that it bounced a bit from decade to decade so that you were simultaneously reading two stories. Evelyn was a lovely character; it seemed such a shame that she was undervalued by everyone until she meet Mrs Threadgoode at the nursing home. And the characters at old Whistlestop were great - really felt like everyone looked out for each other. I also liked the way she mixed in the town´s newsletters by the postmistress into the book. They gave another good perspective on life in the town. Oh, and that ongoing story of Opal and her cat Boots in it was funny.
Idgie and Ruth´s love story was really sweet. But I am really surprised that such a relationship was so easily accepted at that time? I´m by no means an expert about American history at that time or women´s rights... has anyone seen The Children´s Hour? It´s a film from the 60s, where two teachers are accused of being lesbians and it basically destroys their careers. Anyway, the way I saw around it was that Idgie was such a masculine character that if she hadn´t been described by the pronoun she, you would have thought her a he - so everyone considered her a honourary man; and the little town was such a great place to live that everyone was accepting of their friends.
I am really glad I got to read this book. Just a tip for anyone who liked the Southern American style, try Bailey White!
I already have 24-7-365Reader´s address so I will get this in the post tomorrow.

Loved this book - you know sometimes when you get a book that as soon as you look at it you think 'I can't wait to start this I am goign to love it', well that's what happened, I loved the people, all their different stories and I was a bit sad to say good-bye to them when I finished the book. I know have to decide whether to watch the film or not?!

Arrived safely in the post. Many thanks to 24-7-365Reader!
I really enjoyed reading this book - it seemed quite different from the film. As others have mentioned, the jumping between dates became a little confusing at times.
I have PM'd Vamperstein8782 to send it on.

Posted to Vamperstein8782 yesterday.
Oh, Horlicks! I totally forgot to log that I'd received this... and I've read it already!
Really enjoyed this, though I did have to keep going back and checking the dates at the start of the chapters 'cause I was getting myself confuzzled (though really that's not too rare an occurance these days!). The descriptions of the characters and places were brilliant and I really felt like I knew the people and places by the end of the story.
Will PM teuffi for an address.

I saw the movie made on the back of this book years ago but luckily I have very few memories of it!
I found this book very refreshing. It felt so good to read a story about a small community supporting each other in their own open or secret way. Care, love and friendship show through these anecdotes and are reinforced by Ninny's kindness. This is a story of another time, another place, where people care and live as a real community, despite some apparent segregation.
If the Whistle Stop Cafe opens in such a place, please let me know, I'll be the first to move there!
Thank you very much for sharing this lovely story, JennyC1230!
Waiting for Cross-patch's address to send on.

I feel as if I've had this book for ever - and I'm sorry to have held the ray up. I nearly sent it on without reading it just to get things moving again, but I had real trouble getting hold of anyone - so many people didn't reply or asked to be skipped that I read the book anyway while I was waiting for an address to send it on to.
And I'm so glad I did. I read this lovely little book in just two days, and I absolutely loved it. There was just enough grit in it to stop it being too sentimental for my liking and I must admit to having tears in my eyes in a few places!
The relationships in the book were really well drawn - I had remind myself a few times that these people don't really exist. Evelyn and Mrs Threadgoode, Ruth and Idgie, Big George, Sipsey - for just a while, they WERE real.
The community of Whistle Stop was, I thought, slightly idealised - I don't believe that, particularly in the time it is set, everyone in town would be so accepting of a lesbian relationship.
The treatment of black people in those times was appalling - and I think this book actually tones the attitudes, abuse and violence down somewhat. It's horrific to think that not that many years ago, it was acceptable to treat someone as less than human, just because of the colour of their skin.
Thank you, JennyC1230 for staring this ray and to everyone else for passing it in. I couldn't get any response from Tuttasb, so the book is now on its way to Dei.

Potat1556 is currently in India; she´ll be back next February and would like to be moved towards the end of the list.
I´ll contact lapin-blanc....
BTW, this is a sweet, funny and at times heartbreaking novel.

short entry letting everyone know that the book arrived and is with me. I have PMed next in line to get mailing addy and to be sure they are still interested as he/she is not actiuve in BC at this time. I will move the book on as soon as I have finished reading it.
I PM'ed BigBird and was asked to skip her so I am doing an ISO for Shausha trying to find out if she is still interested in the book or not and if she is a current mailing address.
This was a wonderful and successful bookray, I hope that everyone enjoyed the book! It's at the final person on the list, so I told nuyear1975 they can do what they like with the book now.
