Twelve year old Amir is desperate to gain the approval of his father and resolves to win the local kite flying tournament, to prove he has the makings of a man. His loyal friend hassan promises to help him but this is 1970's Afganistan and hassan is merely a low caste servant who is jeered at in the street, although Amir feels jelealous of his natural courage and the place he holds in his fathers heart. But neither of the boys could foresee what would happen to hassan on the afternoon of the tournament, which would shatter their lives. After the Russians invade the famiy is forced to flee to America, Amir realises that one day he must return, to find the one thing that his new world cannot give him:redemption.

A really well written book that was heartbreaking as well as hopefull. I had trouble putting it down as I just had to know what happened in the end. Don't be put off by the fact that it was set in Afganistan with foreign characters and place names, essential threads or loyallty, family honour, deceit and family secrets run throughout making it a real page turner. There are a couple of twists that i didn't see comming which i thought were very ironic. i did find parts of the story disturbing but would still recommend this book.

This is one of the best books I have read in a while. I couldn't put it down. It is an extremely powerful and harrowing story, but masterfully written with excellent tying together of loose ends. The story is made all the more real because of it's historical setting in war torn Afghanistan. I look forward to reading Hosseini's latest book A Thousand Splendid Suns.

Christmas Day, a bit jet lagged arriving home from hoter climes, met friends for barbeque on Knoll Beach and found this book what a wonderful find the best Christmas present of all. Did not realise the book was a top ten seller and that a film had just been produced. I believe it is one of the most moving books that I have read and wondered why I had never heard of it. A few days after I had finished it I suddenly saw the book in the top 10 best sellers book shelf of a supermarket and couldn't believe that millions of people had shared the same experience of reading the same book! Thank you for introducing it to me and I shall make sure that it is passed on (in fact I understand that it may be on it's way to the hungry English community in the South West of France) but we will wait and see!

Given to me by a friend ("Furzedown") in the UK and will now travel here in France where I live. I will give it to a friend rather than leaving it to be found. A very sensitive, emotive book which I thoroughly enjoyed. The movie is about to come out here in France and I may go to see it - but I don't want the big screen to water down my memories .... !

I always intended to read this book but never got around to it until it "fell into my lap". I'm very touched by the story and find it has peaked my interest in Afghanistan. I'm proud that we have Canadian soldiers stationed there.
