Winner of the Duncan Lawrie Dagger for best crime novel.

Purchased for a special wish list mission.

From Publishers Weekly:
"In Temple's beautifully written eighth crime novel, Joe Cashin, a city homicide cop recovering from an injury, returns to the quiet coastal area of Victoria where he grew up. There he investigates the beating death of elderly millionaire Charles Bourgoyne. After three aboriginal teens try to sell Bourgoyne's missing watch, the cops ambush the boys, killing two. When the department closes the case, Joe, a melancholy, combative cynic sympathetic to underdogs, decides to find the truth on his own. His unauthorized inquiry, which takes him both back in time and sideways into a netherworld of child pornography and sexual abuse, leads to a shocking conclusion. Temple (An Iron Rose), who has won five Ned Kelly Awards, examines Australian political and social divisions underlying the deceptively simple murder case. Many characters, especially the police, exhibit the vicious racism that still pervades the country's white society. Byzantine plot twists and incisively drawn characters combine with stunning descriptions of the wild, lush, menacing Australian landscape to make this an unforgettable read."

Wow! This one is brand new and really exciting. I put this on my wish-list after hearing everyone rave about it on The First Tuesday Bookclub. I almost packed it in my bag for the in-laws, except I know it is on a number of wishlists (probably for the same reason) so I would like to pass it on rather than release it up here. I am sure I will get to this soon.

This was a great book to read. I had high expectations after hearing the big wrap on the first tuesday bookclub (which is why it was on my list). The writing is very Australian and the dialogue is very true, which means that it takes a while to get into the reading of it - words are left out all over the place. I found it a bit hard going to begin with as it all didn't seem to make sense and I thought I was missing something. And about halfway through the novel I thought I was getting to the end. Then I realised that the first half of the book was about a pretty patchy investigation and pretty patchy relationships. I was sucked in completely to the rest of the story, and had trouble putting it down.

I am putting the rest of Peter Temple's books on my wishlist. I don't read much crime fiction (except the american blockbusters), but it is worth reading this stuff. I feel like I met a real town full of people. I spent my time trying to figure out where it was!

Aha . . . karma in action! BellaMack knew I hadn't read this one yet but wanted to, so gave it to me personally last Saturday (17th) when we met for coffee in St Helens. It was lovely meeting up with both BellaMack and sarahbear.

Looking forward to reading it.

8 out of 10

I'm so sorry to be tardy on making this journal entry. I do agree with tdq's comments about being a bit difficult to get into in the beginning, but really it is well worth the effort to get past that stage. I really did enjoy the book and will definitely look for more from this author. My husband also read it and gave it a thumbs up (which is high praise indeed from him who loves to read but doesn't want to talk about it!)

9 out of 10

Definitely a great read; very Australian and refreshingly different from most cop based murder stories. 'Gritty' is a word that comes to mind, but oh so believable (unfortunately). Realistic characters and story and descriptions of places so acute you can feel yourself there. His style is extraordinarily economical with words, not one wasted and yet the pictures just roll our before you. I think Cashin is an interesting character - I hope Temple brings him back in a future book.

I gather that many people from the US have had trouble with it in terms of the Aussie vernacular and the degree of swearing that occurs (in particular the f word), but in the context of the community and characters in the novel it is entirely appropriate in ensuring the dialogue is 'real'.

Now reserved for another special mission!

I found this book slow to start with but I perservered because the writing was just so good. I'm glad I stuck with it as the second half of the book was a real page turner. I loved the realness of the characters, Peter Temple certainly has a unique writing style and I hope to read some more of his work.

What a great book! Finally starting to tackle my Mt TBR, and this was the first one I picked.
Loved the 'aussieness' of the characters and the story; I got totally sucked in rather quickly. Had no idea where the story was headed, very well done. I really liked Cashin as a character, and the descriptions of the areas were so real I can still picture them now. Plus I love it when animals are involved in the story, Cashin's dogs sound so grotty but lovely! I will definitely be putting this author's other books on my wishlist now.
