Kate Daniels Series, Book 1

Atlanta would be a nice place to live, if it weren't for the magic...

When the magic is up, rogue mages cast their spells and monsters appear, while guns refuse to fire and cars fail to start. But then technology returns, and the magic recedes as unpredictably as it arose, leaving all kinds of paranormal problems in its wake.

Kate Daniels is a down-on-her-luck mercenary who makes her living cleaning up these magical problems. But when Kate's guardian is murdered, her quest for justice draws her into a power struggle between two strong factions within Atlanta's magic circles.

The Masters of the Dead, necromancers who can control vampires, and the Pack, a paramilitary clan of shapechangers, blame each other for a series of bizarre killings--and the death of Kate's guardian may be part of the same mystery. Pressured by both sides to find the killer, Kate realizes she's way out of her league--but she wouldn't have it any other way.

7 out of 10

For the most part, I liked this book. I like Kate and I'm extremely curious as to who/what she is and who her parents are. The story was a little confusing at times with the rise of magic vs. technology. I wasn't sure that I really "got" it because I had a hard time figuring out how the world could adjust to something like that. And there was one plot thread that was "tied up" in a rather crappy way - the whole thing with Crest just seemed like the author had put in this romantic possibility for Kate and didn't really know what to do with it, so had to figure out some way to get rid of Crest. The book would have been better if he just hadn't been there to begin with since he really served no purpose whatsoever.

I agree with karendawn on a few points for this one. First of all Crest, his existence did seem a little pointless, unless it was just to throw in a little misdrection and damage her relationship with the shapechangers a little, but they seemed to get over it quickly enough. I too am very curious about who/what Kate's parents were now. The magic vs. technology was an interesting idea, and the vampires of this story were a bit different as well. The actual big bad of this story was a new monster type to me. I had to laugh as one of the secondary baddies was named the same as the city I live in, and so to me, that was just bizarre and funny. :D

I'm looking forward to the second one! next stop Teachie, who won this one during a swap!

I made a journal entry on this the other day but must not have clicked submit.
I agree with the comments about Crest, I wonder if perhaps he was supposed to play a bigger part and then the story took a different turn as it was being written. He certainly got dropped in a very unsatisfactory way. I want to read the next book now to find out about Kate's parentage and the powers this gives her.
