Journal Entry 1 by candy-is-dandy from Braintree, Essex United Kingdom on Monday, February 18, 2008
Having read this as a child yet remembering very little of it, this book needed re-reading. Of course the style is old-fashioned, having been first published in 1864, but it wasn't difficult to read. The narrator, who accompanies his uncle on the journey, is not your classic action hero being full of trepidation. The Professor seems extremely reckless in undertaking such a journey - in fact seems not to care about returning to the surface at all. An enjoyable read, though 150 years on, as far as I know, a journey not actually attempted! You'd need asbestos knickers! This is now off to another bookcrosser for the EuroXchange (March).

I thought I'd read this a child, but perhaps not. Old-fashioned, but exciting and interesting nonetheless. I loved the scientific hypotheses that Professor Lidenbrock and his poor nephew come up with on the course of their journey.

Against the background of 21st century science, this makes for a very silly story... but a very fun one! I enjoyed this more than I expected. I thought it was going to be more earnest, but the narrator ensured that there was sly humour all over the place. Hans was probably my favourite character. I love the idea of him calmly collecting his final wages at the end. And the professor still having the money on him as well! (Can't say any more or I'll give away the story.)

Started reading an ebook of this but in that translation the names had been changed. Was not impressed. Thus, glad to come across this edition. Look forward to reading it.
