Memoirs of a Survivor

I read this book a long time ago, and I don't remember very many details. I remember that I liked it, though.
"Many years into the future, city life has broken down, communications have failed and food supplies are dwindling. From her window, a middle-aged woman - our narrator - watches things fall apart: hordes of people migrating to the countryside, gangs of children roaming the streets.
One morning, a young girl, Emily, is brought to the house by a stranger and left in her care. A strange, precocious adolescent, unafraid of the harsh world outside, she is slowly drawn into the tribal streetlife and its barbaric rituals. Meanwhile, the narrator watches and waits, and as civilisation crumbles, retreats into her hidden world, where reality fades and the past is revisited."

Sent to madmadge today!
It's arrived today! My first Doris Lessing! I've been longing to read her books and even treated myself to The Golden Notebook at the weekend (a Xmas present to myself). But that one will have to wait while I read this one. Thank you Gealach for including me in your bookring.
Much as I was looking forward to reading this book there is so much going on in my life at the moment I don't feel I can do it justice. It's not an easy read and a lot of concentration is called for to grasp the full meaning. What I did read fascinated me and I can quite see why Doris Lessing is such a celebrated writer.
However, I won't hold it up any longer and am PMing the next in line to get it moving again.

Got this one on a rainy day here in Baltimore, Maryland. A long line of bookrings TBR in front of it...don't think I'll get to it until January 2008. Thanks for the nice Christmas card, madmadge! And thanks for including me, Gealach!
Interesting, moving read. The pictures that Lessing paints, while graphic, and incredibly stunning and heart stopping. Don't read in a Mexican restaurant though. I actually finished this one on the 18th just before I left for my Puerto Rico vacation, but didn't have a chance to log it.
Have been persistently PMing RockBird...if you're reading this, RockBird, it's your turn!
