Extravagant, inventive, emotionally sweeping, Corelli's Mandolin is the story of a timeless place that one day wakes up to find itself in the jaws of history. The place is the Greek island of Cephallonia, where gods once dabbled in the affairs of men and the local saint periodically rises from his sarcophagus to cure the mad. Then the tide of World War II rolls onto the island's shores in the form of the conquering Italian army.

Caught in the occupation are Pelagia, a willful, beautiful young woman, and the two suitors vying for her love: Mandras, a gentle fisherman turned ruthless guerilla, and the charming, mandolin-playing Captain Corelli, a reluctant officer of the Italian garrison on the island. Rich with loyalties and betrayals, and set against a landscape where the factual blends seamlessly with the fantastic, Corelli's Mandolin is a passionate novel as rich in ideas as it is genuinely moving.

In my mailbox today!
I almost finished my current read and have no other rings waiting, so this can be up next. Still, it looks as if this is not a quick read and with the busy month of December ahead......I'll try my best not too hang on to it too long.

Thanks for sharing.

I've been trying day after day for one week now, but I just can't get into this one! I don't know why, as I was really looking forward to it. Maybe it's my lack of concentration this time of the year, maybe it's just not my cup of tea (the writing style annoys me, it just goes on and on and on!). I think, I'd rather send this on unfinished, before the whole craziness in the mail and post-offices starts, than to keep on trying. I read for pleasure. I really feel more like picking up something else instead right now. Something from MTBR, that hopefully will drag me into the story right away.

Btw: this is one of the 1001 books to read before you die

Will be sent to biblioknoef today. I will add a few Greek bookmarks I received from Pepita-di-Corfu!

RELEASE NOTES:

Finished this book a couple of days ago. I struggled with it for the first, say, 100 pages but after that became entirely engrossed and I was glad I persevered. Only the ending was a bit disappointing – I felt that condensing so many years of history into so few chapters was unnecessary and did not contribute something extra to this novel – it could have ended where Captain Corelli left the island.
However, I really enjoyed reading it – the brilliant characterisation, the richly lyrical style, the use of vocabulary that made me resort to my dictionary and the interesting way the author portrays the machinations of those in power and those who suffer during war times make this book wonderful.
I must have seen the movie once but forgot most of it – this moving novel though will be remembered!
Have shipped it yesterday to ealasaidmae (gringuitica not having time to read it right now).
Thanks for sharing L1nda!

It's here! It's excellent timing, as I only have one ring right now and I'm almost finished with it. Thank you for the lovely postcard, biblioknoef!

I'm finally done! I feel like I've been wading through a marsh. But a technicolor marsh. I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. I became very emotional and it wore me out. The ending is a little disappointing but getting there was such a wonderful trip that I can't really mind. Jubby asked to be skipped so this will be going to tqd next. I already have her address and should have this in the mail on Thursday.

Ah, I just opened a parcel from the delightful lmn60, only to discover that she's sent me a copy of this book (to read at my non-bookring leisure!). So I shall be returning this copy to L1nda sometime very soon now (will have to wait until next week and payday, methinks). Thanks for letting it hang out with the books at my house for a while!

UPDATE 13 June 2008: And in the post back to L1nda today. Thanks for the bookring!

Collected Corelli's Mandolin from a park bench on 28/12. It was recommended by my son who saw it on the bench. Just starting to read....
