First published in 1983. First Ballantine Books Edition. New York 1984. Paperback, 216 pages.
The blurb:
“THE JOB WE HAVE IN MIND,” CARSTAIRS BEGAN SMOOTHLY, “COULD BE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS...”
The cheerful Mrs. Virgil (Emily) Pollifax of new Brunswick, New Jersey, is once again plunged headfirst into a hair-raising CIA mission.
Posing as a tourist in China, Mrs. Pollifax meets the sinister challenges of the orient to safe-guard a treasure for the CIA...and all but loses her life in the bargain.
“Filled with adventures—and misadventures—nut through it all Mrs. Pollifax is triumphant.”
***
I don’t much like books in this genre with either explicit or implicit political agenda: James Bond by Ian Fleming, Tommy and Tuppence (among others) by Agatha Christie, Mrs. Pollifax by Dorothy Gilman, etc. In this story the agenda is quite obvious: China is the enemy, not to mention Russia or Arabs. I do have to admit, though, that the way Dorothy Gilman writes is entertaining. But still, I hope that she had done her research more thoroughly. For instance, as far as I know ’saving face’ in Chinese context means something else than Mrs. Pollifax—or Ms. Gilman, actually—thinks. Or maybe I just misinterpreted the text. However, the book was a page-turner—and I don’t often say that. :)
I doubt if Mrs. Pollifax—even if she is such a world traveller—has ever visited Finland and especially Kerava. That’s where she’s going next, anyway, since Mrs. Pollifax on the China Station is on someone’s WishList.
ENJOY!

Oh, thank you Tarna for the book. It is a good thing that Dorothy Gilman can write page-turners. Otherwise I would rather read books about CIA being the bad guys and losing the battle and their face of course too. (In the reality they have done that in Iraq. There they have lost more than just their face.)
I wonder why can't some authors find other causes for their heros and heroines to endanger their lives for than CIA. It seems so ridiculous if you think about it. Sujata Massey does the same error with her Rei Shimura. Maybe it is good for the Americans.
Somehow I still like the way Dorothy Gilman writes and describes the personage of her novels. As if she had a twinkle in her eye.
Well, that one gentleman beig a psychic was a little bit too much for me. Fortunately she did not linger long on that.
Now I must find a new reader for this book. Who might that be?
My younger daughter borrowed the collie Miro from her big sister. Miro kept me company while I was reading this book.

Thank you, book arrived today.
I picked this book from 'handbag', after reading a half page exerpt. The word 'Zambia' caught my eyes, which wasn't any garantee of whether the happenings of this book would be situated in Africa or not, and I was aware of that fact, yes. When I opened the envelope, I couldn't help smiling a bit. I suppose I may even like these adventures of Mrs. Pollifax, even though I don't much read this type of books.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

Currently residing near Fontainebleau. Circulating through BookMooch
Arrived from Cheshire, as a swap via readitswapit.co.uk.
I had no idea what an exciting life this book has had before it came to me. What a pity the links from Fontainebleau to Cheshire were missing, though the precious reader probably belonged to both.
I have never read any of the Mrs Pollifax books, but it looks interesting.

I really enjoyed this book. I liked Mrs Pollifax and the plot was interesting. I am not as anti-CIA as some other readers. I think it's just a case of choosing your national spy service.
A real page turner. I am listing it on readitswapit.co.uk.
